New member) to be selected|n Monday night A regular meeting of Penetanguishene town council will be held next Monday night and councillors are scheduled to elect a new town councillor. Four candidates in the 1982 municipal elections have indicated a willingness to serve on the council. They are Ken Tannahill. Bob Cascagnette, Jim Park, and William Geere. They or any qualified Fie Sad © nat of Penetanguishene could be nominated by councillors. Nominees will be voted on in however many rounds of polling are required for there to be majority backing of one nominee. The council vacancy was created by the resignation of John O'Hara, now secretary- manager of the Huronia Airport Commission. Municipal clerk Yvon Gagne said last Monday that there will likely be a thin agenda for next Monday night. The Municipal employees in the Penetanguishene town office are learning how to use computers in preparation for the January 1, 1985, com- puterization of the lown's taxation and accounting systems. On December 4, a $62,000 computer system was delivered to the municipal office and became operational the following day. This week, town treasurer Shirley Bellehumeur and tax collector Betty Valentine are in Guelph for a two-day computer instruction course. Other members of the municipal staff will also take the course in coming weeks. In the new year, the computer system will be used for budget preparation, payroll, accounts payable, purchasing, word processing and general ledgers. Municipal clerk Yvon So said on Monday that the system should pay tor itself in about four and a half years, Gagne said that the computer system eliminates the need to hire more staff for the town's treasury department and will reduce fees for outside auditing. "The system we had was outdated, especially when you consider that IBM got oul of the tax billing system," he said. Until recently, IBM provided municipalities with a tax preparation service at budget time through contract but has' abandoned the service because it is not longer profitable, Gagne ex- plained. In place at the office are several pieces of computer software manufactured by Molnar and computer hardware made by Rexon. There are four computer terminals and three printers. When a Computer system now in place at town office town resident comes into the office to pay a tax bill, his or her tax ledger will be posted automatically on a video display terminal and a print-out will be: given to the customer. | Stored records will eliminate the need to keep volumes of records. A portion of the costs of computerizing the municipal office has been off-set by a $10,000 grant from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing. The grant, offered to Ontario municipalities that wish to update their basic accounting procedures, is available through the ministry's Municipal Action "85 program. On Monday night, Midland town coun- cillors voted to purchase a $107,000 computer system similar to but somewhat more ex- (nisi ve than Penetang's. meeting is being held on the third rather than the fourth Monday of the month.
