Submitted by: Albert Leering North Simcoe Catholic Family Life Centre_ There probably is no greater emotional time for so many people in our culture than the Christmas season. The preparation begins soon after Thanksgiving; the commercial pressure to buy and be of good cheer intensifies the closer we draw to Christmas. We embellish our homes (if we can afford it) with lights and a tree, the streets become alive, and store windows are decorated. A little snow on the ground adds a lot to the festive flavour. Some people can float through this very in- tense time without getting in touch with the deeper issues of their lifestyle and lives. The resull is perhaps seen in a let down or even depression soon after Christmas because something has _ not happened. There has to be more. To me Christmas is a time to celebrate humanity. I take my cue from a Christian perspective in that God became human. We are saved (salvation means becoming whole) through our humanity. The first public celebration Jesus at- tended was a wedding where he sang and danced; he was no Scrooge. Ireneaus, a Christian writer of the second century, ex- pressed it this way: "the glory of God are HELP WANTED men and women fully alive." Not next year, not after death, but now! This means, as I see it, entering more fully into the present reality of who I am. People often have difficulties because they don't allow themselves to be or because they try to live ups to., others, g.ex- pectations and feelings rather than their own. This has nothing to do with being slefish. In counselling I frequently observe that people can't appreciate others because they first of all don't really love themselves, as the second greatest com- mandment extorts us. Christmas FSi. therefore, <a: .very religious time in the sense that we acknowledge our humanness. We attempt once again to enter into the best of what it means to be human - a spirit of intimacy colour and song. We particularly have family festivities at this time of year in order to touch again our rootedness. We eat and drink special things. We give and receive. Hopefully, we can reach into ourselves to offer ofthers what is best in us -our own memories and feelings to celebrate our individual uniqueness. What is uniquely religious about Christmas is to allow others into the rejoicing of ourselves, expecially with the poor, the old, and the alienated.
