My 10 favourite movies by TERRY DUPUIS The following is a short resume of the movies which I enjoyed the most throughout the past 12 months. All of them were theatrically released during this period: 1) COUNTRY - Jessica Lange stepped into a new class as an actress and as a film maker in this movie, which came straight from the heart. This sensitive drama outlines the plight of the modern-day American farmer, whose livelihood and traditional lifestyle is being threatened. COUNTRY is a modern- day Grapes of Wrath. 2) GREYSTOKE - Although there have been dozens of Tarzan movies over the years, this one is in a class by itself. Hugh Hudson, maker of Chariots of Fire, turned his creative eye {o Edgar Rice Burroughs' first novel and he made a visually beautiful and literally faithful screen adaptation of it. 3) IRRECONCILABLE DIFFERENCES - This comedy drama about human relation- ships touched a chord somewhere. It contains Ryan O'Neal's best screen work since Barry Lyndon, it launched Shelley Long as a film comedienne comparable to Goldie Hawn at her best, and it also showed young Drew Barrymore to bea considerable child actress. Besides being about a relationship, this film was also a clever spoof on today's film in- dustry. 4) THE KARATE KID - This warm and humorous movie bore a lot of similarity to Rocky which is not so surprising because it was done by the same director, John Avild- sen. It usessthe same basic formula, but to winning effect in this tale about a boy who moves to California with his mother is forced to take karate lessons from a Japanese neigh- bour in order to defend himself from bullies. Pat Morita almost stole the show as the wise patient Oriental. 5) THE LAST STARFIGHTER - I didn't really expect very much from this Star Wars imitator, but it had a surprising amount of originality and a refreshing sense of humour. Robert Preston was memorable in the cast as an intergalactic con man. 6) THE NATURAL - Robert Redford's first screen role in almost four years was a triumphant return for the actor. He plays an aging baseball player whose career was tragically thwarted by an unfortunate event in his past. He returns for one last chance. The excellent supporting cast included Robert Duvall, Wilford Brimley and Richard Farnsworth. 7) PHAR LAP - This well-made family film about a world famous racehorse came from Australia. The only American actor in the cast was Ron Liebman. 8) PLACES IN THE HEART - This tale about rural life during the Depression was a real winner. Sally Field deserves to win another Oscar for ther performance as a feisty widow, but the entire cast was great. Directed by Robert Benton of Kramer Vs. Kramer fame, this film was a moving ex- perience. 9) THE PRODIGAL - This tale about a modern-day prodigal son was produced by the Billy Graham organization, but it was well- acted and it contained a stirring message. 10) INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM - This long-awaited sequel by Stephen Spielberg to Raiders of the Lost Ark was chockfull of action, suspense and cliff- hanging sequences. Harrison Ford returned as Indiana Jones. Later in the day, the anticipated §champio- nship game proved to be a disappointment to the Elmvale club as they came up against the aggressive team from Alliston. Hard work and determination by all the boys kept them in the game, down 5-3,.unti the ten minute mark of the open to many two on one and breakaway situations that Alliston were able to capitalize on, as they forged ahead with six unanswered goals, to an 11-3 victory.
