Information-honestly, openly and freely shared- is the hallmark of democracy Good show Penetang CITIZENS of Penetanguishene donated some $6,500 to the Central Ontario Disaster Relief Fund last week; that's more than one dollar for every man, woman and child living in Penetanguishene. Mayor Ron Bellisle, one of the local fundraising organizers, says he is pleased with the amount raised. He said he originally expected donations to help tornado victims would total $3,000 to $4,000. With the three to one matching pledge of the provincial government, the two-day Penetang fundraising blitz will have raised approximately $26,000 for the fund. In addition to recognition for Penetang residents coming through for the tornado victims, credit goes to those who helped organize the fundraising drive. They included the mayor and many other municipal officials. The door-to-door idea for fundraising proved to be a good one. Credit is also due those who volunteered to canvass door to Tan MT door last Tuesday and Thursday nights. ria Local businesses, big and small, also chipped in to help those in = de need, either by making donations or holding fundraising drives of their own. While things are not quite that desperate at the Quaker Boarding School, things are in those communities hit by six deadly twisters on May 31 which sliced through the province's mid-section from Shelburne and Orangeville to Barrie and Tottenham. If these communities are ever to get back on their feet they are going to need our continued moral, physical and financial support. Historic day Dear Editor: As instructed and on _ behalf of the Penetanguishene Horticultural Society, we wish to alert the people of Penetanguishene of the van- dalism and defacing of public property in our town parks. Our poor non-profit organization planted six Bicentennial White Pine trees three to four feet high for Ontario's 1984 Bicentennial in our waterfron' park. Our small society was the only organization in the town to do anything re: Ontario's Bicentennial year but all received grant money, and much to our disgust in Human Nature, we had six White Pine trees removed (via chain saw) from the park area. These trees were and McGuire Park. This is not the first time trees have been wilfully damaged, with tops cut off, broken limbs and branches. They were even used as a clothes line and fires were set near the trees. These trees have a hard enough time trying to survive. The 'rees are planted for our future heritage, but vandals think otherwise. Remember to walk in the grass and leave the trees alone. Anyone caught damaging the trees will be prosecuted by the police officials. -Irate Horticultural members, (signed) Helen DuBeau, secretary TUESDAY, JUNE 18, 1985 will be remembered as a historic planted on Arbor Day in both the Waterfront Park day in the annals of Ontario political history. So now there is to be a new alliance government headed by the pear xaitor: Thank yoiudp Ballers, Woolwolths the Gastle Liberals and supported by the NDP. One can expect Liberal leader David Peterson to initiate a flurry of new legislation in the next several months in an effort to project a fresh dynamic image. In spite of the arrangement in which Mr. Peterson and NDP leader Bob Rae have agreed not to precipitate an election for two years, there's no guarantee events in the next several months won't culminate in an early election. On behalf of the CONTACT Information Cen- tre's Board of Directors and Staff, I would like to thank everyone who helped and participated in our fifth annual Big Wheelie Bike-A-Thon.
