The evolution § of Musical Chairs is as provocative as_ the development of a musical itself. ;For ten years the Musician's Copyright Organization known as BMI sponsored free Workshops for com- posers, lyricists and librettists of Musical Theatre under the direction of Lehman Engel, a Broadway Conductor who dedicated his life to the teaching of this very specific craft. He conducted Musical Theatre Workshops in New York, Los Angeles and coming to Toronto once a month to hold classes. Composer / lyricist Joey Miller and librettist Stephen Witkin were members _ of Engel's Workshop for many years in Toronto during which time they were inspired to write a musical based on the, actual workshops. The'* two Canadian playwrights have also worked together at the Charlottetown Festival in Ye Gods! last sum- mer. Witkin has countless credits to his name in theatre, screen plays and television.
