Laurin signaled to short stop who threw her out ati first, and first baseperson Sandy Dubeau threw it home for Ruby Degnaar to tag out Norma ~ Jean Lediard. Third inning for R&R started off with Ruby Degnaar and Linda Ferraro hitting back to back triples for two more runs. R&R scored again in the fifth with four runs and again in the sixth with 4 more runs heading into the seventh inning 11-0. A very determined came back on a couple of R&R errors and some well hit balls with eight runs, but the late rally wasn't enough as R&R Sports pulled together to win the game 11-8 for the 1985 Championship. Gayle Hamelin took the loss for Midland but she pitched well going Burgher-Bits-- --by Arnold Burgher-- by ARNOLD BURGHER Early in the Spring, I wrote in this column, Yanks or Jays will win the American League East by two and a half games. Doesn't seem to be too far off the mark at this moment. Another thing I mentioned a little later on, was that if Toronto has any aspirations towards post season play, then the bat of Lloyd Moseby must start to smoke. He batted .395 for the month of July, .301 in August with four home runs and 15 rbi's, .476 for the early part of September with five home runs and 11 runs batted in. Other positive aspects are the hitting of Jesse Barfield, Cecil Fielder, Tony Fernandez, Damo Garcia and Ernie Whitt. The addition of Jim Clancy to the pitching rotation and the much improved Doyle Alexander cements the strong starting staff. With knee deep relief pitching, this team should do well in September. The biggest problem could be Cox's handling of the pitchers which to me has always been questionable. Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford, Tony Kubek, Yogi Berra, Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, Roy Campanella, PeeWee Reese, Phil Rizzuto, these were the guys we worshipped as kids. Add to that list Gil Hodges, Duke Snider, Stan Musial, Red Schoendienst. These were our idols; future Hall of Famers (at that time). These guys were as clean as the driven snow; they wore halos. They could do nothing wrong and they did nothing wrong. They were representative of all that was good about the great game of Baseball. Someone to look up to, to respect, even to admire, perhaps even to love. A few short years later, what do we have? A couple of months ago Tony Kubek stated during a televised game that an in- vestigation was going on at that time that, if true would severely disappoint a lot of true baseball fans. He couldn't say what the investigation was all about but he certainly was correct. There are no more heroes for todays youth to look up to. Superman is dead. Where did things go wrong? I don't know, but maybe some of the blame falls on the owners? They use the body of the player until there is nothing left, and then they cast it off like a disposable lighter. Perhaps some effort could be spent on the athlete's head. When you take an impressionable kid out of the sticks, put $600,000 in his pocket and put him in front of 40,000 fans everyday and expect him to chalk up Hall of Fame statistics, it's a little much for the mind to handle in a lot of cases.
