General stamp collections are easy inexpensive fo get, LARRY MCINNIS Never miss the op- portunity to pick up an old general collection. They're dirt cheap, you may find an item you've been seeking for years, and in any case, you never know what you'll learn. A keen collector I know has many special areas of interests and collects in a number of topics. But she has an extensive, general collection ("of stamps I like to look at") as yet another offshoot of the hobby. She regularly goes through at least a half-dozen old albums each month picking oul a few here, a few there. It passes the lime, and is inex- pensive. Before I go on, [ll anticipate your question: Where can I get this type of material? The answer is, in daily and weekly newspaper classifieds, at markets, suburban auctions. In your area, if you don't see any advertised, place a wanted ad yourself. surprised at what the small charge for the ad will bring in return. flea Eurals 20}; You may be One of the albums the collector came across recently was entitled The Triumph Stamp Album Stamps of The World. There's no date to in- dicate when it published, although it has only 340 pages, plus a dozen or so pages of advertising. Another clue is that none of the illustrations of British Com- monwealth stamps show a monarch after George NG who reigned from 1910 to 1936. A page introducing the album is entitled "King of Hobbies, Hobby of Kings" and a lists members _ of various royal families from around the world -- there were more then than now -- who were stamp collectors. Foremost, of course, was King George V, who is quoted as writing that stamp collecting " is one of the greatest ' Emergency pleasures of my life."' Many years later, another very important person was to write and say much the same, that his stamp collecting got him through the dark days of the Second World War. That was Franklin Delano Roosevelt, president of the United States. Sept. 17 Simece (Conn y Historical Association monthly meeting.
