'"'I was alone ina new community," she explains, "and my parents sent me batik materials for Christmas and I have been doing it happily ever since." Batik, which started in Indonesia, is the art of dyeing a pattern into a fabric in which parts of the cloth not intended to be dyed are covered with removable wax. Anne Proulx has used the technique to create fabrics which she has made into wall hangings, curtains, clothing and lamp- shades. "Anything you can do with fabric, you can do with batik,' she says. "There is a special fix you can apply to make the colour washable." One of Anne's most successful pieces is a wall hanging of wild geese done in shades of blue.
