Beside the mayor is Kings' owner, Nick Boudouris. The players facing off are Alex McCarl (L) and Midland's Shawn Davy. Penetang won the contest 9-5. Action resumes between these two clubs again but this time, Friday, in Midland. -Photo by Michele Gouett The Toronto Blue Jays have no problem defeating the Kansas City Royals, but they do certainly have a lot of trouble beating George Brett. In fact, they don't beat George Brett. He only single handedly defeated the Jays, Friday night. Four for four at the plate, including a double ARNOLD onener Penetanguishene Junior C Kings hosted Midland Stoneleigh Centennials, Friday night, but they didn't act as congenial hosts as they defeated visitors, 9- 5 in their inaugural match-up of the 1985-86 regular season schedule. Midland GM / Coach, Ross McConnell was pleased with the effort his boys put out, but listed three factors he credited to the loss: missing three key players, glaring mistakes in their own end, and Kevin Steele. Steele of course, is the very talented Kings netminder, who has been described by Penetang General Manager, Peter Dubeau, as the "backbone of _ the team", along with captain Alex McCarl. The "glaring mistakes" comes from an extremely youthful and inexperienced defensive corps. However, these boys are getting educated every time out, and under McConnell will definitely improve before the season gets too old. Centennials' defence is very talented and two home runs, scored four times and recorded three ribbies. Brett is now batting. 583 on the series (7-12). If the Jays are going to win, they must walk Brett everytime up. The key to a Blue Jay win in controlling Brett. However, by the time this newspaper hits the news stands all of that will be history, Dodgers are surprising quite a few people. However, they are not unlike the Jays. They have depth in ptiching, good arms in the outfield, a couple of bats on the bench, and can do a bit of base running. It should make for an excellent series. The scores likely will be low. Now to cool things off for a while, let's talk hockey. Maple Leafs probably won't be able to supply us with the same kind of thrills and enjoyment our Blue Jays have this year, but they should move up in the standings. That's not too hard to do when they were in the basement last year. Friday's trade involving Bill Derlago _ for Boston's Tom Fergus was shocking, but it should give the Leafs Ve some up front. muscle and a few goals. Although they're fine ~ hockey players when they're healthy, Walt Poddubney, Miroslav Frycer and Peter Ihnacak are, at times, liabilities due to the fact they seem to get hurt easily. And they are not the type of players who care too much for the = ag action at the pitch at Midland eeweiae, Soneo rough going. With Jim Korn gone for four months' or more, they had to make a move to add a little aggression to the front line. Exit Derlago, who was one of the more popular Leafs. But to get something, you have to give up something. It seems that the price for Fergus was a little steep, but only time will tell. At last count, I believe that brings the total of new Leaf faces this year to nine. We'll make a few predictions later, but Toronto should make the playoffs this year, but don't expect them to last long in post season play. Maybe next year? Kings take Cents In round one and needs only experience and good coaching to make their mark in the league. Dave Bressette was serving a short suspension, due from last weekends' contest between the same two teams. Rob Fortin suffered an injury at school and might be back by the weekend. The most _ serious problem the team faces right now is the loss of Marlon Gieseler who will be gone for two and a half months while he recuperates from an operation. Mark Gieseler' and Archie Meridis should see a lot of ice time as replacements. ; Due to the injuries and suspension, McConnell was forced to juggle his _ line-up. McConnell was very impressed with the line of Shawn Davy, Al Whidden, and Tom Hook. "They control the hockey game every time they're out there", McConnell stated. McConnell also lauded Chris Lemieux for his work in the net. Peter Newburn should appear in the net this week, as he _ has recovered from his eye injury received in Penetang last week. Last night, Cents were in Stayner and on Friday they will host Penetang for a return encounter. It's a game you'll not want to miss when it comes to exciting Junior C hockey.
