The Mariners were up for this game as they knew that their only league loss last year came at the hands of Owen Sound. The home team struck for the first goal at the 8:54 mark to take an early 1-0 lead that stood up for only two minutes before Penetang's Tim Mason scored to tie the game. Peter Cruise picked up the assist on Mason's goal. With less than a minute to play, Billy Leonard put Central Marine ahead with a pretty goal set up by his centremen, Tim Mason. Peter Couling drew the second assist on Leonard's goal. The game tightened up for a short time before Shawn McConkey made a fine rush and fired a blistering wrist shot high to the corner of the net to raise the score 3-1. Kirk Ruston was credited with this assist. From this point on in the game it was all Penetang as they scored seven unanswered goals before Owen Sound scored their second of the game. Super goal-tending from both Scott Galt and Mike Marchildon kept the home team off the score board even though they out-shot the Mariners by a 27-24 margin. Central Marine's fourth goal was scored by Tim Mason as he was set up by Billy Leonard and Peter Couling. The second period ended with Penetang leading by 41. The third period began with closer checking, but by 11:36, Dwayne Johnson scored a pretty goal on some fine passing from the corner from both Mason and Leonard. At the 8:40 mark, Scott Cummings scored as he was fed a beautiful pass by his centreman Norman Robitaille. Central Marine's sixth goal was scored by Chris Brooks as he was set up on a smooth passing play by Mason who appeared to be everywhere during the game. With the score now 7-1, the host team managed to score its second goal on a goal-mouth scramble. Central Marine answered with a goal of their own within a few minutes as Tim Mason completed his hat-trick on a nifty move behind the Owen Sound net that caught the goalie and his defencemen cat-knapping. The assist on Mason's goal went to Shawn McConkey, who along with fellow defenceman Peter Couling, played a strong game for the and 15-11 in a very exciting and dramatic finish. Mariners. John Bold and Keith Proulx kept the MSS defense off balance as they divided the St. Theresa's attack. By spreading the attack out along the length of the net and mixing it up with quick attacks up the middle the MSS blocks were often late and ineffective. Rob Weber and _ Kevin Belcourt provided the team with strong middle blocking and were a strong force in shutting down the MSS attack. Excellent passing and digging in the back court by Pat Marchand and Mike McKeown kept many rallies alive and while the MSS team had a very big height advantage, the Crusaders compensated with their hustle and drive constantly digging up the MSS attacks and counter attacking using their quickness to wear down the bigger MSS team. Coaches Rick Pressi and Peter Balcom, made a number of adjustments the past week that helped to turn the tide. Throughout the season, MSS has con- sistently been able to win their matches with the Crusaders. Coach Balcom"moved Rob Weber into the middle blocking role the past weekend at the Eastview tournament. This proved very valuable as _ Rob's aggressive blocking was a vital ingredient in the victory. The team's new of- fensive system where they were able to confuse the blocking by disguising the position of the setter, provided the Crusaders with key points during the match. The quiet confidence and determined manner in which the team ap- proached the play off combined with the excellent team work and effort was well rewarded with a hard earned ZONE CHAMPIONSHIP. | AAGTION lai served their countrv as Sunday nearest Sunday.
