Placement 100 percent from engineering tech | 'Better job prospects."' That was_ Chris Shelenko's answer when asked why he took the Electrical Engineering Technology program at Georgian College. The third-year student also said he likes the "co-op"' aspect of the program which combines classroom study with paid on-the-job training. The program Shelenko is taking is one ana number of Engineering Techni- cian, Technology _pr- ograms at the Barrie Campus of Georgian College which will be accepting new students in early 1986. The other programs are Civil/ Resources and Mechanical _Enginee- ring. Winter intake programs are perfect for students who finish high school in January and those already enrolled in a community college or university but want to change programs. Although winter intake programs are common, what makes 'the Engineering Technician / Techno- logy program at Georgian appealing is that students who start in January will be able to graduate at the same time as those who started in September. "The pattern -- of teaching will be such that you will graduate with the people (who started) in September,"' said Ross Blair, Dean of the School of Engineering. Another attractive aspect of these programs is, as Shelenko stated, the job prospects. Blair said there are more placements in industry for the field work (co- op) semesters in the programs than there are students. And the employment rate after graduation is 100 per cent. The technician programs in any of the three disciplines are two years in length and the technology programs are three. According to Blair both professions belong on the engineering team - the engineer designs; the technologist takes the designs and develops an implementation project and the technician works closer to the finished project as part of the implementation crew. Any of the six programs will appeal to someone who enjoys being involved with the conception of a project, putting the plans on paper and then making them work, but each of the three areas of Civil / Resources, Electrical and Mechanical has distinct characteristics which appeal to different people. The Civil / Resources programs start out with the same program of studies but after three semesters, students specialize in either of the two fields. Resources would appeal to someone who enoys working outdoors with Page projects such as water resources management. Those involved with civil work on building roads, bridges, buildings and other public use structures. As well, students who enter these programs can take advantage of state-of-the-art | equip- ment.
