Senior Marauders drop first game of season civeutine GRAHAM The senior Midland Secondary Marauders came up against their strongest opposition this past weekend. The senior blue and gold took part in the seventh Central by BERT MASON In their only hockey action of the weekend, the Penetanguishene Central Marine Major Atoms travelled to Parry Sound on Sunday to play the home-town Shamrocks. Central Marine opened the scoring at the 6:32 mark when Adrian Maurice took a pretty pass from left winger Dwayne Johnson to put the locals up by a 1-0 score. Parry Sound replied with a goal of their own with only ten seconds into the second period to tie the game at 1-1. Midway through the second period, Billy Leonard scored to break the tie as he was left alone in the goal crease area and Tim Mason was credited with the assist. The Mariners went up by two goals when Shawn McConkey fired a blistering shot from the face-off circle to raise the score to 3-1. Scott Cummings drew annual Kawartha Classic in Peter- borough. This tour- nament featured sixteen teams, most in the ""AAA" level: Teams competing included Eastern Commerce, George Harvey, West Marine the assist McConkey's goal. With only 15 seconds remaining in the second period Dwayne Johnson scored as he completed a three way passing play between his line- mates Adrian Maurice and Marcel Monague who also drew assists on his goal. The period ended with the Mariners in the lead by a 4-1 score. The third period saw tighter defensive play and the only scoring came from _ Parry Sound's Graham March Three Hill, and Martingrove from Toronto as well as Kennedy, Centennial and Herman all from Windsor. Defending provincial "AA"' champions Timmins High also competed. Midland's opening 4-2. win who managed to slap in a rebound after Penetang goalie Scott Galt stopped a break away with only 18 seconds remaining in the game. Both Penetang goalies Mike Marchildon and Galt played well and were called upon to make several big saves at critical times throughout the game. The final score was 4-2 for Central Marine who now await their first tournament of the year in Huntsville this coming weekend. lucky people Three lucky people got early Christmas presents last week when their names were drawn for Maurice Furniture's 10th Anniversary Draw. The first prize of a Hotpoint Microwave oven was won by Midland resident Louise Roi. The second name to be drawn from the drum was Gord Lafreniere of Penetang. Mr. Lafreniere won himself a Brentwood rocking chair. 'Karen Forget of Lafontaine was the third prize winner of a braun heater. 534-316] THIS WEEK SEE LEN FOR A DEAL Christmas Turkey Special! The local lads were quite nervous to start this game and quickly fell behind 10-0. This ten point lead never dwindled as the Bears finished the first quarter with a 20-10 lead. Martingrove never trailed but MSS reduced the defecit to eight points at the half and seven points at the end of regulation time 56-49. Jim Faragher played a very strong game against a much bigger Bear team and led MSS scorers with 10 points. Ken Shearer added seven points. Foul shooting proved to be Midland's downfall as they only shot 53 per- cent from the charity stripe. This same Bears team recently defeated top ranked George Harvey in two games. In their second game against Henry Street from Whitby, the Marauders provided a lot of excitement for the local fans. Trailing by eight points with 45 seconds remaining, the team went to a very effective zone press to force a tie game and eventually won the encounter 74-67 . in overtime. Jeff Bales with 18, Jim Faragher 11 and Steve Thorpe with 10 led the scoring parade. Once again the boys had a bad game at the foul line making only 57 percent. Even a 70 percent ratio would have prevented this game from going to overtime. Coming back from a defecit of eight points in seconds has to be the highlight of the still young year. The third game proved just as exciting as number two but lady luck wasn't with the seniors this time. In this game, the blue and gold lost a good lead late in the fourth quarter and eventually the game, in overtime, to Windsor Centennial 52-51. This loss prevented the boys from reaching the consolation champio- nship . Jeff Bales with 12 and Kevin Gray with his best game of the Tournament, scored 11 to lead Midland. The boys once again could have won this game from the foul line as they converted only 20 of 34 for 59 percent. Despite the two set- backs in three games coach Graham was quite pleased with the weekend. Mt. St. Louis had five slopes open and one triple chairlift, they reported a base of 30-50 cm of that 10-12 cm were new man made base. The fee is $12 for the day. Horseshoe Valley reported a 20-30.cm base, they had four slopes open and one triple chair in operation, the cost for a day of skiing is $12. Snow Valley is open on the weekends, and will also be open next Friday night. Midland's Mountainview Ski Hill is still awaiting a major snowfall before any action can occurr on the slopes. Despite being outsized by a_ considerable margin, they more than held their own on the boards and were able to run with each team they played. The fact that they went into overtime in two games will provide valuable ex- perience down the road for the players and the coach. Participating in this year's tournament will be eight teams from Barrie, Orillia, Midland Last year's champions, innisdale, will not be returning so the championship plaque will be up for grabs this year. The purpose of the tournament, says ESPSS senior coach Craig Hawkins, is to give the coaches a chance to see their teams in action before the regular season starts. For many players, it will be their last chance to impress their coach and to make the final team roster. Tournament play gets underway at 9 a.m. with the play-off round scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. The championship match should get underway at 4:30 p.m. The public is invited to- come out and enjoy the tournament. best teams in the province.
