----Sports-Keport- Centennial Arena mecca for super shinny Midland Silver Stick Tournament draws dozens of teams from Ontario seinen BURGHER The annual Midland Silver Stick hockey tournament got off to a rollicking start, as Midland Indusmin Bantams played host to Orillia and skated to a 1- 1 draw. Brad Wadge gave Midland a 1-0 lead with a minute to go in the second frame. Orillia came up with the equalizer with only a minute 22 remaining in the game to give each team a point in the round robin _ tour- nament. Indusmin were assessed six minor penalties to three for Orillia. In their second con- test, Indusmin once again failed to tally in the first period, and found themselves down 2-0 at the end of the frame. After two minutes and 18 seconds had been played in the third, Billy Meridis put Midland on the scoreboard assisted by Steve Summers. Three minutes and 37 seconds later, Mike Lafrenier notched the equalizer with Chris Quesnelle and Bill Mitchell drawing assists. In their third game of the tournament, Midland skated to a 2-1 victory over Brampton. Mike Larmand opened the scoring at 5:43 of the second period with help from George Gunther. Four minutes later, Greg Lalonde teamed up with Chris Walser and Jamie Peden for a 2-0 Midland lead. Midland goaltender, Chris Hackney, stoned Brampton until late in the third when Chris Brodeur found the mark with just 48 seconds left on the clock. Midland picked up four minutes in penalties to Bramp- ton's eight. The Midland Marlin Travel Major Peewees dumped Midland Minor by an 8-1 count in their first encounter. The Minor Peewees were a last minute substitute for Toronto's Ted Reeve. The game was tied at 1-1 after the first period. Marlin Travel scored five times in the second and added two more in the third. Gary Moore led the scoring parade with a hat trick, while David Forrest chipped in with a pair. Trevor Irvine, Gary Puddicombe, and Andy Bowers each clicked for singletons. Chris Bales notched the sole Minor goal. In the Novice division, Midland Gervan and Associates nipped Stouffville by a 4-3 count. After falling behind 1-0 in the first period, James Boyd found the mark for Midland on a solo effort. Stouffville then restored their lead at 5:37. Ryan Lesperance scored the only goal of the second period assisted by James Boyd. Pat Brooks tied the game 1-1 on a solo effort late in the first. James Boyd notched his first of two at 2:43 with Ryan Lesperance and Jason Latour in on the play. Mark Larmand upped the count to 3-1 with a marker at the 30 second mark from Jason Grouette. Boyd com- pleted the scoring with a third period solo effort. Midland French Dry Cleaners Major Atoms allowed but one East Gwillimbury goal at 9:23 of the first period, but it was enough as Midland fell 1-0 in a hard-fought contest. In an Silver Stick exhibition contest, Alliston edged Midland Minor Peewees 2-1. Chris Bales' gave Midland a short-lived 1- 0 first period lead before Alliston tied it up late in the period. Alliston notched the winner at the 7:44 mark of the third. Midland Gervan and Associates Novices clinched a trip to Saturday's champio- nship final with a 3-2 win over Woodbridge Sunday morning. James Boyd gave the locals a 1- 0 first period lead when he was set up by Jonathan Deacon at 7:01. Woodbridge notched the only tally of the second frame and struck for the lead at 6:21 of the third. Less than two minutes later, Peter Tumber notched the equalizer with help from Mark Larmand and Jonathan Deacon. Then, in dramatic fashion, and with just 43 seconds left in -the contest, James Boyd found the range for. the game winner assisted by Mark Larmand. Midland French Dry Cleaner Major Atoms swept by Meadowvale Reliable Lock 9-0. Midland was led by the three goal performan- ces of Troy Caley while Adam Deacon and Adam _ Bourgeois added a pair each. James Kranz and Ryan Walser chipped in with a goal apiece. In previous contest, the Andy Traynor coached Atoms, fought to a 1-1 draw with Stouffville Clippers. James Kranz from brother Robert and Sean Rourke gave French Dry Cleaners a 1-0 first period lead before Clippers notched the equalizer with less than a minute remaining in the first period. Midland Marlin Travel Major Peewees scored three period unanswered goals enroute to a 7-4 victory over Alliston. Trevor Irvine scored with better than a minute left in the first period to tie the game before David Forrest gave Midland the lead early in the second. Alliston came back with two in a row to regain the lead. Marlin Travel's Gary Miller then struck for a pair of tallies two minutes and 32 seconds apart both on booming slapshots that the goaltender ap- parently didn't see. With 1:06 left in the period, Alliston scored again sending the teams to the dressing rooms deadlocked at 4-4. Trevor Irvine with two and Gary Puddicombe represented the margin of victory in the third period. Gary Miller was named Marlin Travel Player of the Game for third - his two goal and two assist performance. In another Peewee encounter, Marlin Travel scored five unanswered goals in the second half of the game to beat Barrie Sargeant Ready Mix 8-2. Gary Miller and Gary Pud- dicombe gave Midland a 2-1 first period lead before Gary Moore upped the count in the second. Barrie drew to within one, less than a minute later but Midland were on their way within 22 seconds when Miller drove the puck home for a 4-2 The puck stops here lead. Miller completed his hat trick at 3:21 with another dazzling shot from the point that handcuffed the Barrie netminder. Shawn Lalonde, Andy Bowers, and Trevor Irvine notched single tallies in the third to ensure the victory. Midland Legion Midgets fell behind 3-0 in the first period but struck for four in a row before having to settle for a 44 tie with Oshawa Labourers. Jeff Baguley's goal at 2:04 of the first frame seemed to lift Legion Midgets Midland Indusmin goaltender gloves the puck as his defenceman sprawls on the ice in an attempt to block the shot from the out of a lackluster performance. Shawn Fisher and _ Steve Bressette scored back to back tallies on solo efforts to draw even with Labourers. Then, Shawn Potter gave Midland the lead for the first time in the contest with three minutes and 33 seconds remaining in the game. Oshawa pressed hard for the equalizer and with 44 seconds left, picked up a loose puck in front of the Midland net and fired it home. In their second con- test, Midland Legion Bantam Midgets couldn't get untracked and dropped a 4-1 decision to Flamboro Muskies. Jeff Baguley tallied the lone Midland marker. Legion Midgets were a much different team in their third contest of the Silver Stick tourney as they came from behind to defeat a very strong Aurora Dominion Hardware 2-1. Second and third period goals by Tyler French and Glenn Simpson were enough for Midland's victory. Mike Player was very strong in the Midland net. Orillia shooter in Silver Stick hockey action at the Midland Arena last week. Midland and Orillia tied the game at one apiece. Gieseler and Belcourts team for 17 points Midland Stoneleigh Centennials erupted for six third-period goals to trip Parry Sound Shamrocks 11-5 in Georgian Bay Junior C Hockey action Sunday in Parry Sound. Daryl Belcourt not- ched his first of three to open the scoring at 4:38 of the first period. Shamrocks replied 22 seconds later when Marty Osbourne beat Chris Lemieux in the Stoneleigh net. Dave Garagan gave Parry Sound a 2-1 lead with a power play tally at 6:21 before Midland came back a minute and 15 seconds later with their own power play goal. Kevin Belcourt was credited with the tally with assists going to Daryl Belcourt and Marlon' Gieseler. Captain Shawn Davy put Midland in the lead with another power play marker at 12:12 from Al Whidden and Chris Edwards. Shamrocks knotted the score at 3-3 at 18:28 but Marlon Gieseler regained the lead for Midland with a tally with only five seconds left on the clock. Todd Beasley and Marty Osbourne scored early in the second frame to retake the lead, but Steve Bressette tied the score at 5-5 before the period ended. Cents came out flying in the third as Pat Marchand and Daryl Belcourt each counted twice while Marlon Gieseler and Kevin Belcourt added singles. Daryl] Belcourt finished the game with three goals and three assists, while brother Kevin added a pair of tallies to go with his three assists. Marlon' Gieseler chipped in with six points on two goals and four assists while Peter Wright contributed four assists.
