After the dust had settled, Trevor Irvine and Gary Miller were named to the Tour- nament All Star team. Midland's first encounter Friday pitted them against Indianapolis Racers. They handed them a 10-5 defeat with Trevor Irvine picking up a hat trick. Jason LeClair and Shane Cooper split goal tending chores in the contest. Marlin Travel's second game on Friday was against Chicago, which was defeated 4-2. Danny Sibley recorded a pair of goals, with singles going to Irvine and David Forrest. LeClair was handed the goal tending assignment in this game. Saturday, Midland defeated Lorne Park by a 5-2 count with Irvine, Gary Moore, Dan Sibley, Gary Miller, and Gary Puddicombe picking up single markers. Cooper ably defended the twine. Sunday moring, Marlin Travel nipped Niagara on the Lake 4-3 to put them in the evening's championship contest. Midland got off to a quick start as Trevor Irvine staked his team toa 1-0 first period lead. Shawn Lalonde fired a pair of markers and Midland held a 3-1 lead entering the third frame. David Forrest was credited with Midland's fourth tally, before Niagara came back with a pair, but it wasn't enough as Midland hung on for a 4-3 victory. Once again, LeClair and Cooper shared netminding duties. Marlin Travel Peewees doubled the score on Pettawa 8-4 for top honours in the nine team tournament. The sun must have been sitting in the right place in the sky for the Midland team as Mark Buttineau decided to pick that game to score his first goal of the year, a feat he repeated two more times in the contest to record a hat trick, which brought his entire team off the bench to congratulate him. Dan Sibley, David Forrest, Gary Puddicombe, Trevor Irvine, and Gary Miller all contributed singles to the victory. Shane Cooper was in net for the win. The five tournament victories brings Midland's record in the last 35 games to 34 wins and one loss. by LARRY BOWEN Although professional wrestling is generally considered a spectator sport, my avid interest sometimes takes me too close for comfort to the ringside action. Seven years ago, the promise of a wild bout between the infamous Sheik and fan favourite Lord Athol Layton prompted me to take my camera along to Barrie Arena. Neither the referee nor the ropes could contain the battle between these two big name wrestlers. When they lept from the ring and began using spectators' chairs for weapons, I couldn't resist running towards the action and snapping a photo. Unfortunately the Sheik was not impressed with my photography. Leaving Lord Layton bleeding on the arena floor, he came after me in- stead! By the time Layton recovered enough to come to my rescue, the Sheik had grabbed my hair, and was about to stick me with a pencil he pulled from a hiding spot in his boot. Most fans prefer to watch this sport from the safety of places like the bleachers in Maple Leaf Gardens. With few tourists to swell the audiences of wrestling fans in small towns like Midland, Penetanguishene, Orillia, and Collingwood, professional wrestling matches are generally fought in Toronto, during the long cold Ontario winters. In the main event at Maple Leaf Gardens, Sunday, Jan. 12, Andre the Giant was victorious over King Kong Bundy in a dramatic steel cage match. The World Heavyweight Tag Team Champions, Greg the Hammer Valentine and Brutus Beefcake, successfully defended their titles in a hard fought match against the British Bull dogs. A technicality disqualified an enraged Randy "Macho-Man" Savage in his bout with Dino Bravo, the reigning Canadian heavyweight champion. And in a long awaited grudge match, martial arts expert Mr. Fugi succumbed to the Kung Fu challenge of the immensely popular Ricky Steamboat. The action picks up again at Maple Leaf Gardens Sunday, Feb. 9, when Paul Orndorff takes on "'Cowboy" Bob Orton. Orndorff is still basking in fame from his Wrestlmania tag team bout with Rowdy Roddy Piper, one year ago in Madison Square Gardens against Hulk Hogan and Mr. T. In addition, Tito Santana will battle Jesse "The Body" Ventura in an inter- continental championship match, while a rematch is scheduled for the world championship tag-team, with Greg "The Hammer" Valentine, and his partner Brutus Beefcake, pitted against the British Bulldogs. The opponents have yet to be an- nounced for both George "The Animal" Steele, and the Iron Sheik, on the Feb. 9 pro wrestling card. Kings in 15-3 romp Penetang Junior C Kings visited Gravenhurst Sunday and came away with a 15-3 decision. Penetang led 4-1 after the first period and 7-1 after two, before erupting for eight in the final stanza including six within three minutes and 46 seconds.
