Peterborough's Joe 30,000 winner Hogan, b ARNOLD BURGHER Peterborough's Joe Hogan, defeated Midland's __ Leighton Smith in the 29th annual 30,000 Island Bonspiel at the Midland Curling Club Saturday and Sunday. Hogan defeated Percy Ehler 16-4 in the opening match, and followed that up with a 10-5 win over Jim Shaw before getting by Bill Bundy of Orillia in the semi- final. Meanwhile, Leighton Smith squeezed past the Peter Mount rink of Milton 6-4, and then wallopped Bryan Wilson 12-2. Smith defeated the Phil Simpson quartet for the right to meet Hogan in the final. Midland's Keith Williams emerged victorious in the second event, by edging the rink skipped by club president, Doug White. Williams nipped Hugh Nicholls of Lambton, 9-6 in his opening contest, before coasting to a 15-4 win over Percy Ehler. Lambton's Carlo Viola was William's victim in the semi-final. After losing his first match to Williams, Hugh Nicholls suffered his second straight defeat, this time to the Midland foursome skipped by Jack Charlebois, by a 7-4 count. Nicholls then rebounded to defeat Wendy Gates and Per cy Ehler, to find himself in the third event final against Midland's Chub Lavinge, who he © defeated for the honours. Bill Bundy was the consolation winner over Phil Simpson. Jehn-Nielsen, John Nielen, District Manager of Hiram Walker Brands Limited, one of the sponsors of the annual event along with National Victoria and Grey and Molson's Breweries, was on hand to present the awards to the winners. According Huronia Optical leads finals 2-0 Huronia Optical appears prepared to make short work of their final series against Therrien's Furniture in Penetang Recreational Hockey League playoff action. Friday night at Penetang Arena, Huronia slapped Therrien's with a 10-2 defeat. Gary Hansford was the offensive star with a four goal per- formance, while teammates Carl Cowan, Gary Preston, and Mark Decourcey all notched a pair. Terry King replied with two goals for Therrien's. On Sunday, the story was no different, as Rob Quesnelle enjoyed a four goal game, to lead Huronia Optical to a 13-5 triumph over Therrien's. Paul Hayes registered a hat trick for the victors, while Gary Hansford struck for a pair of markers. Wayne King, Carl Cowan, Bruce Guthrie, and Mark Decourcey added singles in a winning cause. Dave Lefaive recorded a hat trick for Therrien's, with Chris Anderson and Terry King chip- ping in with single markers. Huronia leads the Series, two games to nothing. Carstairs, Tim Belcourt and Larry Merkley will be the guests of honour at a formal reception being planned for the Brian Orser Hall in the Penetanguishene to Penetanguishene and Glenn Mayor Ron Bellisle, all the details of the event have not yet been ironed out. Although the Town of Penetang and the Penetang Curling Club are definitely behind Bellisle said the Town Councils and the Curling Clubs of both Midland and Elmvale, as well as the Provincial government, have shown interest in backing the event.
