Seventy-five in ESPSS Track Meet. -Burgher Bits Leafs look to the future The Toronto Maple Leafs went down to defeat at the hands of the St. Louis Blues Wednesday night. But there was no shame as the Leafs were not supposed to be in the playoffs, let alone act like giant killers in polishing off division winning Chicago Black Hawks in three straight and then taking the Blues to a seventh and final contest to drop a 2-1 decision. And that was without the ser- vices of Rick Vaive who was sidelined with a serious rib injury. The young Leafs played with a lot of savvy and determination not displayed too often dur- ing the regular schedule. This young bunch of upstarts have begun to bear fruits of their labour. Clark, Courtnall, and Leeman are beginning to make McNamara and Maloney look like heroes. Salming looked like he's star- ting his career all over again and the play of Rick Vaive was outstanding, not to mention Brad Smith who made for lack of talent with hard work which resulted in a first rate per- formance. The play of Wregget in goal was superior, and Kotsopoulas patrolled the blue line as if he owned it. Mirko Frycer displayed that he can throw a pretty mean body check when he has to. The Leafs still have a couple of holes to fill if they wish to continue on the comeback trail. The success of the St. Catherine's franchise this year will add some fresh and talented new faces to the big club next year. Look for Wes Jarvis to earn a shot. Todd Gill should move out Brad Maxwell for a defensive spot next spr- ing. Young Allan Bester could be Wregget's back up next year, although management has stated that Bester has no future with the Leafs. What prompted that statement is anybody's guess, but his play down on the farm as one of the top netminders in the American Hockey League has earned him a shot. There seems to be more genuine enthusiasm regarding the near future successes of the Toronto Maple Leafs than there has for the past 20 years. The future looks good. Some people are already calling for the Leafs to finish first in their division next year. It just might happen, Stay tuned. Schmidt second at Mosport Midland's Gunter Schmidt has added yet another laurel to his already long list of achievements by picking up a second place finish on the weekend in the British Automobile Sport Club Spring Sprint Races at Mosport. Driving a Garms MufflerWorld/Budget Rent a Car sponsored by VW Rabbit, Schmidt enjoyed a three lap lead, until a safety pin broke on one side of the hood. Rather than risk the chance that the other one would snap and have the hood fly up, he elected to head for the pit for a quick repair. The trip to thé pit cost Schmidt about 30 seconds. He was unable to make up the lost time, although at the finish he was only around 10 seconds in back of the winner. Schmidt's fastest lap in the 16 car field was clocked at 1:42:05 in the season's first race for the Ontario GT Championship, which takes place over six weekends. Schmidt's next race will be June 7 and 8, also at Mosport. The nine year racing veteran was Canadian Slalom Champion three times, Endurance Cham- pion once, and finished second in the Ontario GT last year. Schmidt lost a chance at the champion- ship in the last race when his engine blew up. Schmidt estimates that it costs him $1,000 a weekend to participate in the races, with the hope of picking up more sponsors if he races well. Page 14, Tuesday, May 6, 1986 Cold weather and early morning showers did little to dampen the enthusiasm of the 75 athletes who took part in the ESPSS Track and Field Meet Thursday afternoon.
