Penetang arts and rec. I have been asked by this newspaper to once again write a column dealing with the recreation, sports, arts and cultural activities Penetanguishene and the surrounding area. I will at- tempt to keep you informed and up to date on as many activities and projects as possible. You can help by keeping me informed of such things as _ special events, registration dates, clinics, workshops, etc. If this column is going to reflect the activities in the area the various groups and organizations must con- tribute. Maybe it would have been appropriate to in- troduce myself first, I didn't so hopefully you will accept my introduction at this time. My name is Ron Marchildon and | have been the Recrea- tion Arena Ron Director, oe tee | : Jj . s Schooner's sailing Musician Jim MacMillan told visitors to the Historic Naval and Military Establishments the real story of the H.M. Schooner Bee in song on Friday afternoon during a special reception held in honour of the Labatt's Ontario Breweries. The reception was held to thank the brewers of Schooner Beer for their generous donation of $15,000 to the Establishment Heritage Association's Sailor's Sunset Adventure program. You may register for one week or both, the dates are June 30 - July 4 (excluding July.1) and July 7 - July 11. 2) Swimming Instruction - again at Bayfield Park and runs for three weeks - Aug. 11 to Aug. 29 in the afer- noons. Cost to be $25.00/child. Both these programs are being offered in co- operation with the County of Simcoe Recreation and Special Services Depart- ment. Registration forms will be available shortly at the Municipal Office, 10 Robert St. W. An interesting new sport is being played at the Arena these days - its Roller Ball Hockey. A local team spon- sored by Reamax is playing in an Ontario League with teams from Kingston, Peter- borough, Toronto and St. Thomas. They play home games on alternate Sunday afternoons from 2 to 4. It may be worthwhile to come out and have a look. A last attempt will be made to establish a Men's Ball Hockey League. On Sunday, May 18 at 2 p.m. registration will take place in the lobby of the Penetanguishene Arena. The hope is to establish at least a few team leagues, so if you are at all interested please come out and register. That's all for this week so talk to you again in seven days. Ron Marchildon Flash fire burns youth A Markham younster, Jef- fery Smart, 14, received minor burns to his face and chest when a fire burst out of a barrel at Wye Heitage Marina. The sudden fire oc- curred at 12:30 p.m. last Sunday. The barrel was one of a number in the area con- taining refuse, the Midland OPP report. Fesserton house fire A Fesserton resident has been left homeless after a fire Sunday morning that took the Waubaushene and Coldwater Fire Brigades over 5 hours to extinguish. According to Waubaushene Fire Chief Tom O'Hara, the fire department was dispatched to the scene of the blaze shortly before 11 a.m. Sun- day.
