| Political walk Kids and garbage galore When this gang of kids piled on to the back of the bus on Friday morning there was barely any room left to sit. The bus, which is usually used to transport the youngster back and forth to school, was used for a special mission last week. In a last ditch effort to regain the lead in the North Simcoe Waste Management Association's Recycling contest students from St. John's ; Honorary Chairman of the Penetanguishene Richelieu : Club's Annual Health Walk, M.P. Doug Lewis, was one of the 200 participants who made their way from the , from the Town Dock to PGH on Saturday morning to help raise money for the hospital to purchase some much needed heart monitoring equipment. Participation in this year's event far surpassed last year and by the end of : the week officials should know if between the Penetang walk and the Elmvale Lions Club's Walk/Bike-a-thon they School in Waubaushene loaded up their bus full of recyclable five times to make a drop off at the depot. Recycling Manager Anne Desroches was caught in the middle of all these smiling faces who hope their last trip to the depot on Friday would give their school a first place finish in the competition and $1,000. Last Tuesday evening members of the Steering Committee met with their consultants from the In- stitute of Environmental Research to discuss the fin- dings of the first phase of the study which will look at all recreational and cultural aspects of Penetang. Everything from the parks to the public library was in- cluded in the questionnaires which will be the basis for the cration of a 10 year Leisure Master Plan for the Town which will be used as a plan tool for Town council and various recreational and cultural organizations. Steering committee member, Michelle Quealey said there was nothing shocking about the findings, she described as a confirma- tion of many of the issues already addressed in the planning stages of the committee. With the survey in hand, consultants Rick Moore and Jim Morgenstern will work, along with the committee members, and hopefully have the first draft of the final report completed -within the next two months. Quealey says once the ) draft report is completed then the committee and the consultants will decide when to take the report to Town Council for their input. In an interum report to the steering committee, consul- tant Jim Morgenstern stated that many of the problems resulted in a lack of com- munity awareness of many of the programs that are offered. Statistics from the surveys indicated that only 60 per cent of the respondents were somewhat familiar with leisure services with only 18 per cent indicating they were very familiar. Seventeen per cent of the respondents felt they were not familiar with the service offered. From the results, only one additional major facility was recommended for the Town, an indoor swimming pool. Although 70 per cent of those surveyed rated the many sports programs already offered by the Town as good or excellent, addi- tional leisure programs such as fitness, crafts, cultural and heritage programs and teen activities were also suggested. Before the final work is done on the Leisure Master Plan, results from a separate library users survey must be completed. Radie Shaek DIVISION.
