June Blood Donor Clinic falls short The Midland Red Cross held a blood donor clinic at the Civic Centre last Wendesday and came 15 units short of its 310-unit goal. For eight hours, Red Cross volunteers prepared donors and collected blood while people enjoyed juice and donuts supplied by volunteers. Although there were 343 potential donors, only 310 were accepted. Jim Manuel, a Midland Baptist minister, received a pin and certificate for his 50th time giving blood. Manual, 48, says, '"'actual- ly this is my fifty-first time, but I appreciate the cer- tificate all the same." Other 50th certificate donors were Richard St. Amant, Edward Light and Pat Dawe. Douglas Lawrence, Robert Main and Oliver Deschambault received 35th donor certificates. Potential donors began with filling out an informa- tion card and having their blood tested for con- taminants or drugs. As well, people answered a questionaire asking about medication or illness ---Obituary Florence Goatc Florence Phoebe Goat- cher who's last residence was the Villa Retirement Lodge, Midland, died June 14 at the retirement home. She was 90 year's old. Daughter of George and Mary Brawn, Florence was born in England. She met her husband while still liv- ing there and on January 15, 1918 married Frank Daniel Goatcher in Nor- thampton, who sadly pass- ed away 20 years ago. A Midland resident for many years she enjoyed the area and loved the beauty of the country. her dies at 90 She is survived by her two daughters Hazel Pet- tersen who resides in Van- couver and Helen Elo of Thunder Beach, Ontario. As well she is survived by 11 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held June 16 at Nicholls Funeral Home. Rev. A. Fathering was the of- ficiating clergy. Interment was at St. Mark's Cemetery, Midland. Pall bearers were Danny Goat- cher, Randy Elo, Kevin Kelly, Tom Hendy, Bill Playter. Birks dies at age // Jack Birks of 36 Anne Street, Penetanguishene died June 14, 1986 at the Penetanguishene General Hospital following a brief illness. He was 77. Birks was born in England and came to live with an aunt in Vancouver at the age of 15. He has been a resident of this area for the last 40 years and was well known in Cognashene and Penetanguishene. During his long and rewarding life he operated a tourist lodge in Cognashene and for many years ran a confectionery store on Roberts Street West in Penetanguishene. As well he served on the Penetanguishene Police Force for 10 years. At the end of his employment years he was a security of- ficer at the R.C.A. plant. Birks is survived by his wife Marjorie, and his two daughters Pamela Robitaille of Penetanguishene and Cyn- thia Deschambault of Midland. As well the deceased is morned by his five grand- children, Tara, Jeremy, Jai Robitaille and Holly and Kelly Deschambault. His one surviving sister, Lesley Birks of Brighton England is also saddened by the news of her brother's death.
