Portugal wants corn There are excellent pro- spects for gaining new customers for Ontario corn in Portugal following a re- cent European trade mission. Hank Krech, chairman of the Ontario Grain Corn Council, says Portugal needs to import about 1.5 million tons of corn and had indicated strong in- terest in buying Ontario corn. sf "Starch manufacturers were greatly impressed with our ability to deliver quality corn," said Krech, who took part in a recent two week trade mission to five European countries. The mission, sponsored and organized by the corn council and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, met with corn wet millers, dry millers, feed compounders and straight feeders in Por- tugal, Spain, England, Belgium and West Germany. Members of the trade mission also met with European Economic Com- munity (ECC) officials in Brussels. "The mission was suc- cessful in making various members of the EEC aware of Ontario corn and its quality,"' says Krech, who pointed out that the mis- sion purpose was to gather information which may lead to future sales. Ontario can expect the best results in Europe by concentrating on industrial users who demand higher quality product. Using Ontario corn, European processors can get a higher yield of pro- ducts such as corn flakes, starch, corn oil and grits for the distilling and brew- ing industry. Corn shipped to Europe from southwestern Ontario has fewer broken kernels and less corn dust - known in the industry as fines -- than product from other countries. This results in higher yields for the end- users in Europe. Ontario corn is moved directly from the fields in- to ships on the nearby St. Lawrence Seaway and therefore requires less handling,, he said. This results in less breakage than in other areas where the corn may move through a number of elevators before reaching the ship. Krech said that although European wet millers are not happy with the quality of EEC corn, they have no option but to use it because of the price differential created primarily by the EEC import levy. Euro- pean dry millers will pro- bably continue to use harder Argentinian plate- type flint corn for their pro- ducts, he said. Taking part in the mis- sion were: St. Lawrence Starch Co., Mississauga; Ontario Corn Producers Association, Guelph; Louis Dreyfus Canada Ltd., Par- rish and Heimbecher Ltd., Toronto; Maple Leaf Mills Etd:; Torento; » wc. Thompson and Sons Ltd., Blenheim, and James Richardson and Sons, Toronto.
