Dan Whitfield was one of the four engineering department employees in- formed on June 24 that that department has been abolished. He has been kept as acting general manager until two weeks after a general manager is hired. Last week Whitfield, ask- ed if he will apply for the job, answered, "I'm look- ing at it. | don't know what they have in mind." Mayor Al Roach said he was welcome to apply, Whitfield said. Whitfield meets all of the qualifica- tions specified in the advertisement for a general manager, he said. Whitfield left a job in Oakville after 10 years to come to Midland. He has been here for two years. "'I am beginning to wonder if I was right to move up here." Troop of troupers Attention all kids! STONELEIGH Motorcycle rides Young Bradley Earles is not sure if he wants to drive a motorcycle when he gets big, but he did enjoy the motorcycle ride at the midway at last weeks Sidewalk Two Tiny sailors sail around Bay Rod Prouse of Lafon- taine and Steve Nunn of Thunder Beach have circum-navigated Georgian Bay in a Hobie Cat. The pair left in their 16 foot, two hull racing sailboat from Thunder Beach on July 9 and return- ed a week later. On their last full day of sailing Prouse and Nunn travelled from the tip of the Bruce Peninsula to Hope Island, a distance of 70 miles. Prouse estimates he and Nunn covered in total close to 300 miles. "It was pretty fast sailing at times." For hours on end the two men were propelled in their small craft by the wind at a speed of between event. 15 and 20 miles per hour through big waves. They don't know if anyone before them has circum-navigated Georgian Bay in a small racing boat. Prouse says that the unusual aspect is that they sailed in such a small boat. Hobie Cats commonly are used for a day of racing, not trips of hundreds of Sale. This motorcycle-go-round was only one of the many attractions for the younger crowd at the annual miles. Catamarans are proven as long-distance craft, though. "The Polynesians used to go thousands of miles in them." The men went up to Killarney, the top of the Bay, and returned along the other side, along Manitoulin Island and the Bruce Peninsula.
