McLean MPP Simcoe East The Ministry of Revenue began mailing the proper- ty tax grant cheques to eligible Ontario seniors on Oct. 31, and will continue to do so each week. Seniors are required to have filled out an application to be eligible. If you have not done so, you may contact the Ministry of Revenue, 50 Grosvenor Street, Toronto, M5S 2V3, for an application. The amount of the grant depends on the person's occupancy cost for 1986. For those that received this grant last year, the coming cheque represents the final installment of the 1986 pro- perty tax grant for seniors. The interim grant that was paid last spring represented one half of last year's total grant. The amount of the final cheque was calculated as follows: for tenants, 20 per cent of rent payable to a maximum of $500, and for homeowners, the actual amount of their property taxes to a maximum of $500. To qualify for this grant, seniors must have incurred an occupancy cost in 1986. Those living in nursing homes and receiving a government subsidy, or liv- ing in homes for the aged or in chronic care facilities, or in institutions that do not pay property tax, or are living rent-free with relatives, do not qualify for the grant. The 1986 property tax grant application form must be completed and returned by Dec. 31, 1987. The sales tax credit che- ques in the amount of $50 for seniors will be mailed in late November. No ap- plication is necessary for seniors who receive federal old age security or have previously established their eligibility with the Ministry of Revenue.
