Sister Anne Maureen holds the bit yy Elsie P. Rutherford Elsie P. Rutherford, a resident of 491 Midland Avenue, Midland, for ap- proximately 50 years, has died at age 87. She died on Oct. 3, 1986, after four months' illness, in Huronia District Hospital. Elsie Rutherford was a charter member of the Midland Ladies Pro- gressive Conservative Association. She was the first white child born in the little Mission of Michipicoten, four miles south of Wawa, Ont. Her father, David F. May, was a _ prospector, and a native of Virginia. Her mother, Jennie Liv- ingston, was born in St. Catherines, Ont. Elsie May was a teenager when her family moved to Toronto. There she met and married the late Jack Rutherford. Jack Rutherford wa a prominent sports figure in Midland for many years. He died in June, 1974. Elsie Rutherford enjoyed gardening, sewing, knit- ting and travelling. She also enjoyed her grand- children and great grand- children, by whom she will be sorely missed. Elsie Rutherford, as a child, attended public school and St. Mary's Con- vent, in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. She married John William Rutherford in Toronto on Dec. 5, 1917. Daughters June Riley and Ruth (Mrs. Willard McElrea), both of Midland, and Joyce of Beverley Hills, Calif., and brother Chaunce May of Midland and sister Marion Crane of Richmond Hill, as well as four grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, sur- vive her. Her husband, her sister Bessie Hoffie, and grand- children Reade Riley, Lori McElrea, and Brent Riley predeceased her. Rev. Al Farthing of- ficiated at the funeral ser- vice held Oct. 6 in Nicholls Funeral Home. Interment in Lakeview Midland.
