Another two pointer On Thursday, Nov. 13, Driftwood hosted the Midland Minor Pee Wees to an exhibition game at the Community Centre and played poor hosts at that as they beat Midland by an 8-2 score. Curlers do it in the House? The membership at the Penetang Curling Club have been pondering the sudden success of the club. The executive had con- sidered bumper stickers; after all, the Windsurfers achieved great things with "Windersurfers do it Stan- ding Up." We could have used "Curlers do it in the House" but it was turned down. One of our ingredients for success, Russ Howard and his rink, have been campaigning out west. Last week-end entered into the Wardair Curling Classic at Calgary. They curled in good com- pany. World champion Ed Lukowich fell in the early rounds, David Smith of Scotland, this years' Silver Broom finalist, also failed to make the final rounds. they were. Manitoba was represented > by Orest Meleschuk. Alber- ta was out in strength, Ron Northcott, Pat Ryan and Paul Gowsell among others. Russ, Glen, Tim and Kent won their first five games into the quarter - finals and lost in the extra end. They left with $4,500 prize money. Harold Breckerridge's rink won the $22,000 first prize. The high rollers will be coming into town for a $2,000 cash bonspiel on Saturday the 10th of. January. More about that ~ in the next issue. Earlier in the schedule, both teams played to a 6-6 tie and Driftwood knew that they should have won that game as they allowed Collingwood to tie the game with just over one minute left in the third period. Sunday's game began in a similar fashion as Driftwood fell behind skated in all alone to deke the Collingwood net- minder. Collingwood scored the next two goals to take a 4-1 lead that held up until the 40 second mark of the third when Chris Marchildon fired a blistering shot from his left wing to narrow the gap to 4-2 after being set up by Mason on a pretty pass just over the blue line. Drift- 2-0 with less than two minutes of play. Tim Mason scored his team's first goal on a breakaway from centre ice as he pick- ed up a loose puck and wood had several good chances in the period to tie the game, but it was not to be as the puck just couldn't find its way in to the Coll- ingwood net.
