ee gon t keep raise Carriers of the year The Midland Times and the Penetanguishene Citizen honored the carriers who went the extra mile this year at the Carriers' Christmas party Friday night. (L-R) Bev Burgher (the Times), the Citizen's Jennifer Desjardins Thanks for help with exchange Dear Editor: In September, I con- ducted an informal session on the Penetanguishene Rotary Club Student Ex- change Program at Ecole Secondaire LeCaron and Ecole Secondaire Pene- tanguishene Secondary School. At these sessions, discussions took place as to the Exchange Program to countries such as: Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, Finland, Japan, New Zealand, Sweden, Thailand, and West Ger- many. Later in the month, a total of nine applicants were submitted to the pro- gram. A selection commit- tee comprised of Mr. Don Deschambault, Father Don Picone and Doctor Mike Bloudoff conducted two evenings of interviews, to make a successful selection of applicdnt for the exchange. The Selection Committee FLEC order causes comp! pies for new and Dougie Rawson picked up their trophies. David Fournier, and Geoffrey Ball, both honorable Midland Times carriers, were absent. - voted unanimously in favour of Carrie Lynn Reid, a grade 11 student at Ecole Secondaire LeCaron to be the Rotary Student Exchange for the year 1987 -1988. Carrie chose Australia for her exchange. The other participants in the program conducted themselves with maturity and are a credit to their families and schools. I wish to convey my thanks to the following for their co-operation and assistance with the pro- gram: Administration of Ecole Secondarire Move perceived as politicking Dear Editor: In response to your headline of Tuesday, Dec. 16, 1986 "Brown won't keep raise", I would like to point out that not all members of council are in Mr. Brown's fortunate position of receiving a pen- sion that is probably dou- ble that of the general 'public and average council member. It is probable that this pension is indexed to the yearly cost of living in- creases and is a direct result of taxation to the ratepayer by the school board at-52 per cent of the total levy. Most of the present council will be working 41 per cent harder to earn the increase which is directly in line with that given to non-union members of town staff and only brings us more closely in line with other communities of similar population. As has LeCaron and _ Pene- tanguishene Secondary School, Selection Commit- tee, parents and students. Yours very truly, R.W. Cummings, Director, International Service, Penetanguishene Rotary Club. Birthday thanks to community Dear Editor: This month Rosewood celebrates its first birthday. In December, 1985 Rosewood first opened its doors to abused women and their children. The Season's Greetings A Holiday Season Message to Simcoe East Dear Constituents: With the new year almost upon us, we might reflect on the past 12 months, and hopefully we may be able to say that 1986 was a good year, with peace, prosperity and plen- ty for ourselves and our families. I have continued to represent your views in the Legislative Assembly, and I shall stand before you at election time as having liv- ed up to this, my commit- ment to you. I believe that Ontario is still the best place to call home in Canada, and that by working together we can ensure that it remains so. As one of the Almighty's great gifts is hope, let us begin the new year with hope as our com- panion, and gladness and joy in our hearts. The inspiration given me and all who have met Rick Hansen, as he proves, mo- ment by moment, that adversity may be vanquish- ed with faith and perseverence, guides me in my daily activities. Rick managed to transfer Hope into reality, and all of us might aspire to do the same in the new year. On behalf of the Pro- vince, and as your elected Member, I wish you and yours peace and prosperi- ty for the coming year. Allan McLean, M.P.P. Simcoe East board of directors and staff are proud of the shelter which they have been able to provide since then, and have expectations of ex- panding our programs and service in the new year. However, Rosewood would not exist without the enthusiastic support of the entire community. Over the past year the Catholic Family Life Centre, the town of Midland, local ser- vice clubs, professionals, businesses, the media and B; mas season. The constancy of , this support clearly demonstrates that the spirit of giving in our local com- munity is not confined to the Christmas season. We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has helped Rosewood. Thnak you for sharing the ideal that there = 0°? © can be peace on earth and that it can begin at home. Sincerely, Joan Gallagher-Main e 5 Cou " been the case previously with the council, we are in a position of instituting another '"'first"' in that all elected members in the future will receive in- cremental yearly increases and will not have to face the flack for a six year catch up. Perhaps each voter will be now even more thoughtful as to who is to be worthy of their salary. Mr. Brown would be well to expend his energies on other matters than politicking for the next election that he contends he will not be taking part in. Only the success rate for the town will measure our worthiness of another term. There is more going on now due to increased development and interest in Midland's future by out- side groups and we coun- cilors have more to do than rack up political "Brownie Points" for the next election.
