The upstart North Saints in Coldwater tourney This past weekend the Midland Oldtimers Saints participated in the 8th Annual Coldwater Creeks Oldtimers Hockey tournament. Fresh from the resounding defeat at the hands of the NHL Oldtimers during Midland's 2nd Annual Winter Winterfest, the Saints were expected to successfully defend, for the third year in a row, the "C" Division Cham- pionship Trophy. Such was not the case. In a tournament where teams seek their own level, as opposed to being seeded in a specific divi- sion, the Saints met the Gravenhurst Olde Steamers in the first game on Friday night. With Nelson Robillard in nets for the Saints, the Olde Steamers jumped in- to an early lead in the first period only to be quickly tied by a goal from the mained in the "A" Divi- sion and Len Linka won the team hockeystick draw. In the second game on Saturday, the Saints played their neighbour- ing rivals, the Penetang Memories Lounge Oldtimers. The Saints, with their ranks being depleted due to shift work, Warren Duckworth and Larry "Motor City" Smith, Florida holidayers Rick Leaney and John Webber and injuries Ross Heacock (NHL Oldtimers game), went to the farm team, the Midland "Over 30" league, and drafted Richard 'Doc'? Thomas to augment their roster. Burke "Mohammed" Thompson also returned to the lineup after miss- ing Friday night's game. In a close checking game, Memories Lounge open- ed the scoring midway through the first period by slipping the puck past Mike Fleurie. In the dy- ing moments of the period, "Doc" Thomas managed to stab the puck into the net with an assist being given to Terry Knight. The second period was a very close checking af- fair with each team look- ing for the ideal oppor- tunity to score which was capitalized upon by Earl Cousineau's low blast from the centre slot with assists being earned by Bob Larmand and Bill Knibbs. In the final minute of the game, the Saints then staved off the extra man attack to secure the win and to still remain in the "A" Division. NEW IN MIDLAND SU THE USED CAR FACTORY ae Simcoe Anglers and Hunters have been the established for four years. Oom pah pah a huge success The 11th Annual Courtesy Chrysler Oom Pah Pah Curling Bonspiel took place Saturday at the Midland Curling Club with 20 rinks entered. Four teams were three game winners with the Preston foursome of Burl- ington emerging as the overall winners. Other winners were Lilliman of Simcoe and Levely of Brantford. Midland's Leighton Smith was the on- ly local three-game winner. Leighton's crew consisted of Shirley Widdes, Cheryl and Ed Predki of Ajax and Dick and Connie Dickson from Orillia. Bonspiel sponsor, Des Carpenter of Courtesy Chrysler, has confirmed next year's spiel for February 12. Novices split tournament In Georgian Bay Minor Hockey Novice division, Midland Gervan and Associates were nipped 2-1 by Collingwood on the weekend. Pat Brooks open- ed the scoring for Midlsnd at 6:31 of the first period, but the visitors returned the favor with less than a minute to go in the frame. Collingwood fired the game winner a minute and a half into the final period after skating through a scoreless middle stanza. Sunday afternoon, Ger- van and Associates visited Creemore and left with a 3-1 win. Joe Rooney connected late in the first period for Midland to knot the con- test at 1-1. Mark Charlebois banged home the eventual game winner at 8:26 of the second with Kevin Wood assisting, and then Pat Brooks garnered the in- surance marker at 1:21 of the final period with help from Rooney and Adam McCarty.
