Page 16, Tuesday, March 3, 1987 t Midland houseleague hockey playoffs got under- way Saturday with Smith's Mobile bantams opening action with a 5-2 decision over Free Press. Todd Weatherell and Joel Heins each notched a pair with Gary Puddicombe adding the fifth marker for Smith's. Sean Armstrong and Dave Duval scored for Free Press. In peewee play, Midland Times held off a third period rally by Midland Police to win 8-5 while Cowan's Construction and John's Catering battled to a 4-4 tie. : Times scorers were Sean Lavin with four, Spencer Warren with a pair, Tyler Gravel and Mike Besley with one each. Besley also figured in three other plays with assists. For Police Martin Kraftscik netted two, while Kevin Latour, Doug Dutton and Jeff Callos notched one each. Douglas Lunnie earned assists on three of the Police tallies. John's Catering held a two-goal edge going into the third period on the strength of a pair of goals from Ian Reidel and singles from Scott Cooper and Jeff Duval. However, Cowan's scores from Stephan Ber- nard and Ryan Descham- bault late in the game even- ed the match. Mike Boyd got the other two markers. Jazz loses to Midland Jory IDA Jazz ended the regular season of the Simcoe County Men's Intermediate Basketball League on a losing note. The Jazz travelled to Barrie to play the first place Queen's Hotel in what pro- mised to be a close game as each team vied for a chance at first place. Queen's, playing without centre, Ben Kazimier, and all-star forward, Marty McCrone, came up with an inspired effort from the six On | Par ade In atom action, Little Generals outplayed Royal Lepage 2-1 while Realty World overpowered Midland IGA 7-2. Jason Latour got both Lit- tle Generals scores and Jason Smith the lone Royal Lepage tally, all in the first period before goalies Troy Quesnelle and Shane Belfry shutdown the scoring. Realty World marksmen were Cory Duval, with two, David Oster, Adam Corbiere, Jason Herlehey, Keith Crerar and Sean Brooks, who also was credited with two assists. Answering for IGA were Stephen Stoneman and Jeremy Bruhn. In the novice division, Bike Shop dumped Bourgeois cougars 5-2 while Mr. Submarine clip- ped Dynasty Inn 4-3. Cory Bath figured in all five Bike Shop scores, get- ting assists on the first two then adding a _ hat-trick. Ryan Gautreau and Ryan Smith got the first two goals for Bike Shop. Kevin Borsa and Aaron Dorion replied for the Cougars. Chris White tallied three times for Mr. Submarine while Corby Lesperance netted the winner. Dynas- ty markers came from Steven Marshall, Sherri Majors and Cory Dagenais. In tyke's action, Jory's players present to down the visiting Jazz by eleven points 85 --74. The game was close throughout but the home team, on the shooting arms of their guards, held the lead for the majority of the game. Midland's dominant player, Bob Blasco, was ef- fectively defensed, and by his own admission, had one of his poorest perfor- mances of the season. Congratulations Midland Stoneleigh Centennials con- gratulate each other after the tying goal was scored in last week's Georgian Bay Junior C playoff contest. Huntsville Blair McCanns defeated Midland in overtime route. to eliminate them from further playoff ac- tion. The final game went to three over- time periods before being decided. Two previous contests also went the overtime Queens Hotel help, as the enthusiasm and effort needed to defeat the Barrie entry was con- spicuously absent. The win clinches first place for Queen's Hotel and relegates the Jazz to third place in the ten team league. This means the "Over Thirties" will have to travel to Stayner to play the second place Mistics in the semi-final of the 'A' division. The Stayner squad has handed the Jazz half of their four regular season losses and promises to be a formidable challenge to the local team's effort to wrest a league championship. In the Queen's contest, the Midland team were led by guard Jeff Attwood with a solid 22 point perfor- mance. Blasco had 13 and Rick Presse had 11 for the Jazz.
