Midland has its own provincial champion Eleven year old Melanie Brabant achieved every bowlers dream by winning a major championship on the weekend. Melanie bowled in the provincial Four Steps to Stardom Championships of the On- tario Youth Bowling Coun- cil as the Bantam Girls singles representative for the Huronia Zone. At Aprile lanes in Scar- borough, Melanie started her way to the provincials by-winning the first step at the local house round in January rolling 1698 for 8 games [212 average]. She won the second step at the zone level by defeating the girls' representing the 8 other bowling lanes in the zone with 594 triple in Feburary at Base Borden. 2 Sunday, Melanie had her work cut out for her-having to compete against the singles representatives from the other 17 zones in Southern Ontario stret- ching from Windsor to the Quebec border. Some of these bowlers carried a much higher average than Melanie and had more experience. Melanie started off the 3 game tournament with a superb 275, finishing with 5 strikes in a row. Her closest rival rolled 231 be- Marlin ing Jennifer Ferby from Aprile Lanes, the odds on favorite picked to win the tournament. In her second game, Melanie rolled 242 to Fer- by's 214, widening her margin to 78 pins. In the third and final game, Melanie bowled another strong game, finishing with a 209 despite several corner pins and a headpin in her final frame giving her a 726 triple and a win- ning margin of 94 pins over Ferby who finished with a very good 632 triple. Third place went to Kim Mayr! from Aurora with a total of 585. Melanie won the gold medal and a banner to hang up at Bayshore Lanes where she participates in the local YBC program. Melanie will now at- tempt to win the 4th and final step of the tourna- ment, when she competes in the Canadian Cham- pionships on the weekend of May 2 - 4 in Kitchener and Guelph. Melanie will bowl against the singles champion from each of 8 other provinces in her bid for the national title hoping to bring a third national ti- tle in sports back to the Midland area.
