Between -the Sheets Soupe du jour The soup of the day is pea and last Saturday was the day of the pea. The Penetang Peasouper Bonspiel is the harbinger of spring for local curlers and the chance to mingle with other curlers from all around the province. Of course the main topic of conversation was the chances of Russ Howard's rink in the Worlds Curling Championships this week in Vancouver. Two of our culinary curlers, Don Read and Dave Yeoman, assum- ed the responsibility of ad- ding the essential ingre- dient to the Peasouper, they make the soup. They rigged up a ten foot iron tripod in the lounge, from which a gallon iron kettle was suspended over an open flame. If you ever have to provide lunch for 96 hungary curlers, Don passed on the recipe. Take fourteen kilos of peas, two kilos of onions, two kilos of ham and three kilos of salt pork. Soak the peas for twenty-four hours, rinse and simmer in water. Add salt pork, onions and ham to water and boil till fat melts. Add peas, as peas split, add more water as re- quired, season to taste. Recruit a Hydro linesman with a strong back and a large paddle to stir the mess, and the soup she is ready! On the ice, the curlers bent to the task of eclipsing the three game score of 53 1/2 set the previous week by the Rod Reynolds rink of Midland. At the end of the day, the long arm of the law was the truest. The Metro Toronto Police rink of Brian Fielding, skip, Bob McDonald, vice, Fred Willison, second and Bill Goodchild, lead, beat the Bill Howard rink in the third game for the day's high score of 53 points. It came down to the last rock of the last end. When Bill Howard took out the Fielding's shot rock, it en- sured that the Peasouper trophy would remain in the area. Just as well, the old trophy is showing signs of age, I am not sure that it would have survived the' journey down to T.O.-It would not have been hap- py down there anyway. having to listen to all that. Wrench worship. The Metro Police rink curls out* of Avonlea. Rod Reynolds' was an interested viewer behind the Somebody was holding the' broom for him at Midland ~ at the 44 year old 30,000, Island Bonspiel. Rod- breathed a sigh of relief" when he realized that he had won the trophy by half" a point. He said, "It is hard luck for the Toronto rink but somebody always wins the Peasouper by a half or | a quarter 'point." Rod remarked at his presentation speech that he was happy to win the Peasouper at his twelth at- tempt. Leighton Smith was the vice, Jack Charlebois, second, and Keith Craig lead on Rod's winning team. The Brian Brooks rink of Martin Quigley, vice, Bob Bald, second, and Keith Press, lead, were runners up with a 51 point total for the three games.
