Basketball | League Bales hoops 24 in close victory In MSS Marauder Spring Basketball League action Thursday night, Iowa Hawkeyes edged Notre Dame 63-62 in NCAA Division. Chris Bales supplied the scoring punch for the vic- tors with 24 points, while Jason Irwin collected 16 points and Jason Morrow added 11. Dan Sibley scored 22 for Notre Dame with Colin Penney con- tributing 16 in a losing cause. Navy Midshipmen re- mained undefeated with a 99-69 win over Kansas. Gary Miller maintained his scoring lead with a 57 point performance. Ue, mufflercentre Chris Larmand helped out with 20 and Steven Rit- chie added 18. Chuck Quesnelle (20) and 100 join by Ed Pearson Two charming and energetic young matrons, Carol Coutts and Judy Thomas, saw the need, three years ago, for a minor soccer league in Midland, so they promptly organiz- ed one. The first year 60 players registered, the se- cond year 90, this year more than one hundred eager youngsters flocked to join. The league is growing in leaps and bounds. The league's coaches found themselves perform- ing a few leaps and bounds last Saturday morning at the Civic Centre. Under the auspices of Midland's Recreation Co-ordinator Bryan Peter, the ladies con- vened a coaches clinic. The said coaches performed a few callisthenics to put a little spring into their stag- ger and to prepare themselves for the rigours of the coming season. They also formulated some basic coaching drills. All twelve coaches attended, and the Kevin Beausoleil (19) aided in the cause. Trevor Scott recorded 27 in a losing cause for Rockets and Mike Dobson came through with 22. Denver Nuggets won their first of the season with an 85-57 upset over Golden State. Andrew McMenemy scored 26 points for Denver while Craig Pattenden replied with 16 for Golden State and Mike Larmand netted 14. Chicago Bulls and In- diana Pacers share top spot in the league with 4-0 records, while Sacramento Kings follow at 3-1. Bill Mitchell leads all scorers with 143 points, 20 ahead of Brent Price. Trevor Scott trails with 121 and Mike Larmand is close behind with 118. Out of Reach Midland Secondary School Rugby Marauders hosted Barrie Eastview last Thursday and dropped three con- tests to the powerful Eastview ruggers. MSS midgets fell 22-4, while the juniors were dumped 14-0. All the points were scored in the first half of the junior match. The seniors lost 9-0 by virtue of a second half con- ~ verted try. Barrie Central will visit Marauders this Fri- day beginning at 1:30 p.m. soccer league well known _ Toronto referee, Ken Maslin, ad- dressed them on the sub- ject of game management and how to learn to love the referee. Mr. Maslin has been appointed Director of Security for the Under Six- teen World Cup Tourna- ment which takes place in Toronto during July of this year. Sixteen countries will be taking part in the Inter- national contest. Mr. Maslin conferred with Mr. Christopher Armstrong, Referee in Chief of the Midland Minor Soccer League. The players, who range from ankle-biters to shin- kickers (5 to 11 years), play on Monday evenings at Midland S.S., kick-off 6:30 p.m. There will be at least six teams.
