After hit- hours fishing, I can now circus would be putting it remember why I hated mildly. opening days. To call it a game a bit. Paul Jackson of Collingwood was the win- ner on the gross side and Don Charlebois copped the net honours. After finally finding a pool that wasn't occupied, I made my silent approach. In a matter of minutes a herd of rug rats came bouncing: down the bank and splashed into' what was once a quiet pool. Bob- bers (I'm sure were used for muskie fishing) began flying through the air. Space shuttles have made softer landing than those bobbers. If that wasn't bad enough, all the children wanted to fish where I was. Dad was more than helpful. He carried them across to my secluded little sandbar at the expense of wet feet. Now that's dedication. It was just about this time that I made my retreat. I was. out- numbered. And, by this time, any rainbow trout that were in my pool had either left for greener pastures or were buried under the heaviest cover. Even though the kids went fishless, they seem to enjoy their outing. Isn't that what fishing's all about. And so went my opening day. It all came back to me. I remember why I didn't like openings. Moose hunters better get their dollars and pens out. May 15 is the deadline for applications for adult moose validation tags. If you plan to apply, better get your application in soon. MNR states 54 Wildlife Management Units will carry either increased or the same tag quota's. Nor- thwestern Ontario will have the largest increase in tag numbers. However, a few WMU will have a decrease in numbers. Check fact sheets at licence distributors for last year's and this year's figures. You may want to apply for another area. Pike and pickerel season opens today in Georgian Bay. That should see plen- ty of boats out on the water. Both species carry a possession limit of six fish. Pike should still be in our shallow back bays feeding. Weedbeds are just barely providing cover, so most pike are looking for easy prey. Just make an offering they can't refuse. Pickerel are coming off their spawning run. They should be wandering Sturgeon Bay. Minnows, jigs and minnow baits, such as Rapala's, are best baits. Should any pickerel fishermen pick up some small pickerel I would like to hear about it. As Co- Ordinator of the North Simcoe Walleye Project we would like to know if fish stocked last year are shoy-- ing up in creels. Just give me a call. Thanks to Times by Peter Shaw The Midland Bridge Club would like to thank the Midland Times for the excellent publicity given for the International Fund Bridge Tournament which resulted in very satisfac- tory cheque, forwarded to the Canadian Bridge Federation for support of Canadian Players qualify- ing for international play. The winning pairs who will be receiving large rating point certificates from the ACBL for their ex- cellent results were Bernie and Romeo Asselin 60.5 per cent; John Dowling, Jim Hughes 60 per cent; Dorothy Pheasant, Friedel Shaw 58; and Frances Whale, Ed Hill 52 per cent. starting date for Junior in- structional tennis at Little lake Park courts, while the intermediates will receive instruction at Tiffin Park Tuesday, May 12.
