'I just like to a message Hospital volunteers at Penetanguishene General Hospital give so much of themselves with little for- mal reward, but their work was recognized last Wednesday. The hospital held an afternoon tea for the volunteers and presented them "with tokens of appreciation. They were thanked for their work in various areas, including pastoral, meal service, library and technical assistance. And they were recogniz- ed as providing the kind of care that money can't buy -- things like staying with someone until their final moments of life. 'You make the world a far better place for those you touch,' said hospital executive director Sister Joan Whalen. 'You give the world new light, new hope.' The afternoon tea, held at Georgian Manor in Penetanguishene, was at- tended by several ex- ecutives of the hospital. 'We'd be lost without the volunteers,' said John Parker, director of rehabilitation services. 'They certainly add to the care that the hospital can provide.' About 50 volunteers, in- cluding some who had worked five years or put in 500 hours service, were on- hand to hear the steady stream of warm thank-yous.' Some of them, when ask- ed what they get out of the work, said their reward is knowing they helped people. 'My reward is the satisfaction of helping others,' said meals-on- wheels volunteer Gertrude Walker. 'I feel like I helped the community.'
