The Russ Howard Curling Rink, Angela Schmidt- Shelter needs support from community Midland's shelter for bat- tered women and their children is reaching out to the community for support. "We're planning promo- tion events, like having a booth in the Midland Sidewalk Sale, so people will realize we do need help from the public - we can't do it on our own," says Pauline Hindle, Rosewood's newly-hired fundraiser. Rosewood must raise 20 per cent of its operating costs. Hindle was hired this spring through a Job Development grant which has provided Rosewood with a Transition Worker, a Native Worker and a Child Care Worker. After just a few weeks on the job, she has already designed a cookbook which will be sold to benefit Rosewood, and she is now actively seeking volunteers to work with her on a fundraising committee. ; "My biggest task will be to mobilize a volunteer team," she says. Hindle is confident of success because of the warmth and support she has received so far from the community. "People know that}. Rosewood serves a definite need. It's so important for women in distress to have a place to go and someone to talk to," she says. Hindle's extensive background in sales, as well as her work as a volunteer with Brownies and Guides and on her Church Board, gives her the communications and organizational skills she needs for her new job. She is studying fundraising techniques in an intensive workshop program arrang- ed through the Job Development grant office. "We're looking for volunteers, people with ideas - or if you'd just like to help Rosewood with a donation, please call me at Rosewood," says Hindle. Port LCBO open The liquor store in Port MeNicoll will open again for the summer May 4. The store's manager, Jack Scott, said the store will once again be 'supply- ing the valuable service to the people of the town.' Scott said there was quite a controversy last year when the store closed down for the winter, but he said there is a possibility it might not close this winter. However, he admitted he was just 'crystal-balling.' The decision will be left to the LCBO which will study the situation at the Port MeNicoll outlet this sum- mer, he said. e Free Service ¢ Large Selection RENT TO OWN from vy 4e Ty we e No Long Term Obligation Foster and Brian Orser have all thrown their support behind the walk, which will raise money for Penetanguishene General Hospital. Health walk winds up Ready for the health walk? Seems like much of the Town of Penetanguishene will be out to walk with the local world-champions on the fundraising walk May 9. The champion Russ Howard Curling Rink, figure-skating champion Brian Orser, and champion skier Angela Schmidt- Foster have thrown their full weight behind the walk. The Russ Howard team will actually be out walking the streets raising money and Orser will be there in spirit. Unfortunately, the figure-skating great has other commitments for that day. Just before last Wednes- day's town-dinner in honor of the world-famous guests, they held a mini- press conference in front of the cable-TV cameras to show their support. The walk through town (starting at the town dock) will be a 'fun-day' to raise money for equipment for the Penetanguishene General Hospital, accor- ding to hospital executives. Since Orser could not make it for the walk, he challenged hospital ex- ecutive director Sister Joan Whalen to take his place. Sister Whalen said, 'Brian, I accept the challenge. As a matter of fact, I already began train- ing last week.' All the members of the Russ Howard team said a few words in support of the walk. Howard challenged 'all those golfers in the world who spend five hours at the golf course to get out and walk' for a change. Details... MIOIMI?S tine word] !
