Orser starts off campaign in Elmvale Butch Orser has hit the campaign trail, trying to win the Liberal Party nomination in Simcoe East. Last Friday evening he was in Elmvale, at the home of Larry and Luella Simpson, meeting sup- porters and garnering votes. "This an example of the support,' said Orser, surveying the crowd of about 35. "I have lots of friends in these towns. Several have agreed to have one of these meetings. They're the ones who can get me nominated. I'm fin- ding I've got excellent sup- port." Orser says he will sell himself to the public as a businessman who really cares about Simcoe East. Until recently he owned Bea ba Money for meals Meals-on-Wheels program co-ordinator Diane King receives a $500 donation from the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 80 poppy fund from the hand of pop- three Coca-Cola bottling plants. Coca-Cola bought the plants in Uxbridge and Peterborough. Orser re- tains ownership of the plant in Penetangusihene, but his son-in-law operates it. ; Free from business in- terests, Orser says he final- ly has time to pursue a career in politics. "T"ve always wanted to work in the community and work in government," he says. '"'Now there is no reason I can't. I have the time, the opportunity and I want to do it."' To his advantage, he says, is that he can bring a fresh outlook to issues in the riding. "T have absolutely no axe to grind," he says. "'There are some issues that have been beaten around for four or five years and I think when something has been beaten around for that long, there's nothing more anyone can say about them." Orser is convinced he can win the Liberal nomination in Simcoe East and then the election, although the riding has traditionally been a Con- servative one. "T believe that everybody in this riding is starting to feel the strength of the Peterson government," he says. He is also certain the government after the next election will consist of a Liberal majority and that the citizens of Simcoe East will fare better if they are % part of that government. "I see nothing wrong with people deciding they want to vote Liberal. We will have a Liberal govern- ment, they are going to be in power." "On the street I've had people walk up to me and says they are going to sup- port me and some of these people have been Conser- vatives for years," he says. Orser conceeds that the Orser name is a popular and well known one in the riding and that that may help in his quest for the nomination. "T think it should help us because we've all worked hard at making it a good name,"' says Orser of his family. '"But if anyone is py fund chairman Don McPeake. Some of the reci- pients of the hot meals, cooked at Huronia District Hospital and delivered to homes, are veterans. going to vote for me because I can skate, I have to be upfront with them. They shouldn't, because I can't." So far, Orser faces three other candidates for the Liberal nomination in Sim- coe East. They are Myron Humeniuk of Tiny Township, John Moreau of Port McNicoll and Gerry Wink of Orillia. Members of the Simcoe East Provin- cial Liberal Association will choose amongst them at a nomination meeting June 20 in Coldwater. To vote at that meeting, riding residents must become a member of the party. Membership fees are $5 per person, $10 per cou- ple and $15 per family. The student rate is $1. Member- ship forms are available from any of the candidates. Harl Orser KASPER'S ARE MOVING UP!!
