ae, Berry good Shawn Dusome of Penetang holds a Balm Beach Road. There is much to do, beautifully-ripe strawberry while he picks for strawberry lovers this weekend. a whole bunch at Don Foster's fields on Strawberry festivals Strawberries will be pop- ping up _ absolutely everywhere this coming weekend. There are at least three strawberry festivals this Friday and Saturday. Strawberry lovers can begin their feast on Friday on the lawn of St. Paul's United Church from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Ifit rains, the party moves indoors to the Great Hall. This one is sponsored by the Huronia District Hospital Auxiliary. Then, after less than 24 hours rest, the strawberry- mania continues at the Church Hall in Penetang. The Ladies' Guild of St. James On-the-Lines Anglican Church is spon- soring the Strawberry Tea and Bake Sale starting at 1 and ending at 4 p.m. And, last but not least, its the Annual Strawberry Tea and Bazaar starting at 2 p.m. at St. Andrews Centennial Manor, 340 Dominion Ave. in Midland. You can meet friends and enjoy fresh strawberry shortcake until 4 p.m. that day. And what to do when you've rested from the weekend but still crave strawberries? If you still have a copy of last Friday's Huronia Holiday, it has.a number' of _ recipes specifically made for Elderly persons hold first meeting The two Midland town council-appointed representatives on the Elderly Persons Centre Board were to attend their first board meeting last night. The town council is donating $2,000 and some of the time of, the municipal recreation direc- tor to the Elderly Persons Centre project. Rev. James Manuel and the congregation of Calvary Baptist Church are spearheading the organiza- tion of a non-profit activi- ty centre to serve senior citizens of Midland and area. Space inside the King Street church is being of- fered for use as the activi- ty centre. Last week Rev. Manuel said that the board's hope is that the centre will open in September as planned. "We seem to be moving along well in sketching the program that people want to see,"' he said. Power out in Port but it's not Hydro A story in the June 9 edi- tions of the Midland Times and Penetang Citizen headlined Port Blackouts contained an error. The story said power outages in the village of Port McNicoll (which start this coming Saturday and will affect a large number of Port's residents) would be caused by Ontario Hydro crews at work. In fact, it is the Port McNicoll Public Utilities Commission which will be shutting off power at various times during the week, to upgrade its lines. The Times regrets the er- ror and apologizes for the inconvenience it may have caused, especially to On- tario Hydro. Student jobs pay well Now that the school is out for the summer, the job market in Midland is real- ly picking up. Although the Canada Employment Centre for Students has been open on Dominion Avenue for months, the real action starts now, according to Supervisor Tammy Smith. "We are filling up the jobs we had," waiting on the board, she said last week. Some of the more com: mon positions are restaurant work, general labour, babysitting and cashier positions, she says. And, the best part of it all, the jobs are "paying pretty well." Employers feel they have to chip in a bit more to attract the students, she said. This week has officially been declared Hire a Stu- dent Week. Summer bingo line-up change The nightly bingo lineup at the Stardust Bingo Parlour has been altered, pushing some of the non- profit organizations which raise funds there out. Until recently, about 11 non-profit groups had been on a waiting list to use the bingo parlour for fund-raising. So Tiny Township coun- cil (which has jurisdiction over Simcoe Road 25, where the Stardust is now located) moved to push some of the groups that "had been making a lot of money" out temporarily and allow those who had been waiting in. For those who are now in, the move is "great." Like the local branch of the Canadian Diabetes Association, which will be strawberries, for you to using the Stardust for enjoy. weekly bingos on Tuesdays. But for the Huronia Gymnastics Club, getting pushed out meant a scram- ble to find other sources of cash to meet financial com- mitments for the upcoming year. "We had made a lot of financial commitments,"' said Bill Young, past presi- dent of the gymnastics group. "Now they've swept our feet out from. underneath us," he added. But Tiny's Bylaw En- forcement Officer, Mike Dorion, said it was only fair to let the groups take turns using the bingo hall. The gymnastics club, and all the other groups who were moved out, would all be allowed back in the future, he said. And, he added, Tiny council plans to review the licences every 13 weeks. Some groups which were pushed out might be let back in, he said. Meanwhile, the Huronia Gymnastics Club and some other groups have made ar- rangements to use the Midland Curling Club for bingo, at least for the sum- mer months. Barbershop in 1988 The Huronia_ Har- monizers announced last Tuesday that the annual show will be presented in January 1988 as a Winterfest production. This production, Heritage of Harmony will trace Barbershop Singing from its start 'til the pre- sent day and will bring quartets, octets and chorus numbers during the all music show. The Huronia_ Har- monizers, the Midland Chapter of SPEBSQSA will close activities for the sum- mer with a Sunset Cruise on the Bee on June 23. During July members are reminded of the barbecue on July 10 at Alex Widmeyer's home. Rehearsal practice nights begin August 4 at Jim Lynn's home, Robert St. East, and move to Mon- signor Castex School in September (Tuesdays) after Labour Day, at 8 p.m. If you are a Barbershop- per, were a Barbershopper, or would like to be one, come on out. 1c] THE DARDANELLA "Hotter Than Ever" WASAGA BEACH, ONTARIO ) on the Beach at Ist Street .
