Second game of the evening saw the league leading Roadrunners take on the second place Beacon Bay squad. In their two previous meetings, Beacon Bay was outscored by only three goals, which was evidence that game number three should be just as close. It took only 46 seconds for Beacon Bay to penetrate the Roadrunner defence and get one in, to give them a 1-0 lead. Michelle Piitz scored her third of the season, while Bridge Club news The Midland Club seems to have established itself on the local scene. The number of new players who drop in for a game is increasing. And the new players do well in play. Dorothy Man- ton, just beginning as a duplicate player, and without, as yet, a regular pariner, Bridge dropped in on June 10, hoping to find so- meone in a like situation with whom she could play She found Peter who was there to fill in, in case of an odd number of players attending. Playing bridge with a strange part- ner with whom you have not had any chance for discussion before the game starts is not easy, but Dorothy played an outstan- ding game resulting in an excellent 65 per cent win. Beatrice and Romeo Shaw, Quesnelle are also among the club's newer players. They received a good score in the Epson World-wide Pairs Championships, and this Wednesday came into the winners circle, tying Bill and Mary Tucker, the local Epson winners for third place with 54 per cent. Veteran players Bernie Asselin, Jim Hughes, were second with 57 per cent. Dorothy Pheasant, Friedel Shaw; Frances Whale, Ed Hill (who tied for the club Pairs Championship the previous week); and Rick Wolkowski, Jim Walsh all received good scores. The Bridge Club is open for bridge at the Midland YMCA every Wednesday evening, play starting at 7 p.m. and new members are more than welcome. Coldwater Bridge The winners at the after- noon contract bridge earlier this month at the Coldwater Bridge Club, were Friedel and Peter Shaw with 61 VPs, Iris Dolvea/Marj Smith 51, and Dave Parker/Verna Williams third with 33VP. At the evening duplicate, Friedel Shaw and Jim Hughes obtained a good win with 61 per cent, George and Rae Kingsborough were second with 58; followed by Helen Medveckis, Gus Salcevkis 53; Dorothy Pheasant, Brad Osborne with 52 per cent; Errol and Muriel Swackhammer 51; Bill and Mary Tucker 48; Dot and Dac harris 46; Joyce Hall, Iris Bolyea 42; Mary Bell, Next match cont'd on pg. 24 went two for four, knock- ing in three runs. The evening game on June 15 will be the Coldwater Club's Open Pairs Charity Championship with 70 per cent of Sectional Chyam- pionship rating points to the winners. A good low- cost way of contributing to a Canadian major registered charity and en- joying an evening's bridge. On the evening of July 6a qualifying round for the North American Open Championships will be held. All bridge players welcome. Thursday saddled with the loss. Wid- des surrendered 14 runs on 13 base hits, walked six and fanned one. Vasey committed two errors and left seven on base while R&R committed a pair of miscues and stranded five runners. Next contest for Pene- tang will be Thursday night at Little Lake Park to face Midland at 6:45 p.m. teammates Lise Gagne and Maggie Staathof assisted on the play. By the time the Roadrunners got going again, Beacon Bay centre Luanne Hook scored her eleventh of the season, to give the Brewers a 2-0 lead. Just when it looked like the Roadrunners were down, Cathy King put them back in the game at 9:11 of the second period. Assisting on the play was Lisa Merkley, giving her six on the season. However, it was a matter of a little too late, as both Brewer goalie Cathy Dupuis and the goalposts were against the Roadrun- ners this night. The win moves Beacon Bay two points closed to the Roadrunners, who are now only three points ahead of the Brewers. Out Of Reach Jeff Bell of Midland reaches for the ball but was able to come up with it as he tripped during Midland Huronia Volleyball Club's beach volleyball action Saturday at Little Lake Park. The weather was great for the sport as several teams engage in fun play each weekend. FORD TEMPO The No. 1 selling car in Canada today!
