They won't be the usual maniac drivers who transform the main arteries of the city in- Set up to dragstrips during rush hour. These cars will be going a tad faster than the normal Pinto... and will hopefully be under control a little more. Some of the best motor car drivers in the world will be in attendance. Even Jackie Stewart will be there, albeit as a TV colour commentator. With car races, crashes are inevitable. Just ask local racer Gunther Schmidt who has probably seen more than his fair share of dented fenders. The CFTR road report crew won't be needed for this event. The Midland's Little Lake Park. My hope through all the hoopla surrounding this event is that drivers who are already jerks on the road won't turn into greater jerks by watching these pros on TV or in person. I spend a lot of time on the road. And, more and more I wonder when my luck is going to run out. Knock on wood. I go up naments are run throughout the summer on the beach courts at Little Lake Park. And, not all those peo- ple doing that are men. Yes, I know it's hard to believe but some of those excellent drivers of the female persuasion screw up once in a while. This leads me to the focal point of my story today" Last week, cruising home' from Parry Sound late at night, my partner and I at CKCO-TV_ experienced something that could have put us two meters under very easily. I had just told Jim Arm- strong what a great job he was doing driving. (I had nodded off and awakened mid-way home.) He said it was about time I con- gratulated him on his driv- ing skills. ..All of a sudden, heading in our direction, were four bright lights. A transport was to our left and the other set of lights was not in our lane but to our right. Zoom! We zipped bet- ween the pair of oncoming vehicles as we held our breath: Having been perilously close to death, we did what came natural- ly. We burst out laughing. I don't know if it was from fear or from the coin- cidence of my comment to Jim on his good driving or what, but we were bowling over. Finally we calmed down enough to rationalize the situation. However, we still could not comprehend why this jerk was in our shoulder lane. We've come to the con- clusion that the driver, whoever he or she was, tried to pass the rig but realized he/she wasn't go- ing to make it and went across the highway to get out of our path. I hope and I pray that the upcoming Molson Indy does not lead to idiot driv- ing such as I've related to you. Safe drivng this summer. Day Care is a growing need in our community. The Y.M.C.A. of Midland is hoping to address that need.
