Gov't caused delay: NSWMA A spokesman for the nisfil site and even had a Ministry of the Environ- ment came under attack by members of the North Sim- coe Waste Management Association last week for comments he made which were reported in last Tues- day's Midland Times. David Oved, an assistant to environment minister Jim Bradley, told the Times two weeks ago that "it was not prudent" for the NSWMA to be giving up its search for an emergency dumpsite. The waste management association will need an emergency dump after Oct. 31 when its present one shuts. So far, only one site in the area has been willing to take North Simcoe's waste, but it was contract ready to be sign- ed, said Gagne. The story on page 3 of last Tuesday's Times revolved around the NSWMA's calling off its search and waiting for the government to produce an alternate solution, since In- nisfil was declared "out." In the story, Oved criticized the NSWMA and said they '"'should not be sitting back and hoping Queen's Park will do the "work for them." But NSWMA clerk Yvon Gagne said the reason his group was "'sitting back" was because the govern- ment ordered them to. Otherwise, he said, the NSWMA would have superior, Gary Gallon. Gagne says Gallon apologized for Oved's remarks and assured the NSWMaA that Oved was wrong and the association need not pursue an emergency site. "The ministry told us not to proceed," said Gagne. Gallon did not return any calls made by the Times on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday to confirm his position. However, the local district officer of the en- vironment ministry, Ian Gray, said the NSWMA is still not completely absolv- ed of all responsibility. They may still have to do some legwork in finding a site, despite the fact the their problem, he said. "T don't want to go into detail,' said Gray Friday, "but we are working on finding an alternate facili- ty." "However," he added, 'if our plans fall through then what David Oved said is perfectly correct - they have a problem." Gray noted that the NSWMA was justified in calling off its search for the emergency site now, as he works on finding another municipality to send waste to. But in the end, he said, "'waste disposal is the responsibility of the municipality." "So in the same respect, they should still be looking for a site."
