Vasey wins tourney Vasey Seniors Fastball Club travelled to Parry Sound on the weekend and returned with all the marbles. In their first matchup, they scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 4-2 win over T&H Sports of Parry Sound. Vasey's first counter came on a fourth inning lead off home run by Bob Widdes. thruwa mufflercentre Rob McLean opened the sixth by being a hit batsman, but was eventual- ly snuffed on a fielder's choice by Bob Widdes. After pitcher Rob McLean grounded to short for out number two, a Bob Widdes base hit drove in Gordon to make the score 2-1. Vasey's second run came in similar fashion in the third as Ross Nicholson led off with a free pass and was sacrificed to second by Gordon. Smitten ripped a sharp base hit to score Vasey's second counter and tie the contest at 2-2. The winning run was scored in the sixth as Bruce Guthrie stroked a one out double, went to third on a sacrifice fly to center by Jim Mills and scored on Roger Widdes' single. Rob McLean tossed a four hitter and struck out 13 including the side in the seventh. The win sent Vasey to the championship contest against Bracebridge. A home run, a single, two passed balls and another single added up to a pair -ot,) nuns tor Bracebridge in the top of the first. A pair of hits in the third inning put Vasey in the hole 4-0. Over the first three inn- ings Vasey only managed one base runner, and that one by a walk. However, the tide turned in the fourth as Brent Gordon led off with a walk, but suc- cumbed on a Rob McLean fielder's choice. Brent McLean fanned for out number two, then back to back singles from Bob Wid- des and Jim Mills, plus a triple by Bruce Guthrie scored four runs to tie the contest. Bracebridge took a one run lead in the sixth, but Vasey countered with a run in the bottom of the sixth on singles from Bob Widdes amd Guthrie. Bracebridge threatened in the top half of the seventh when the first twp batters reached on singles, but a pair of fly ball puts and a strike out ended the potential rally. Keith Ball began the bot- tom of the seventh by reaching on an error to the first baseman. Consecutive singles by Brent Gordon and Rob McLean plated Ball with the winning run. Seniors down Pirates 7-4 Vasey Seniors built up a 7-0 lead and held on for a 7-4 win over Port McNicoll E&R Discount Pirates Thursday night in Simcoe Rural Fastball action. Keith Ball led off the first for Vasey with a double and was sacrificed to third by Blake Edwards' fly ball to right field. Ball then scored on another sac to right by Bob Widdes. Brent Gordon and Nick Nicholson led off the third with a pair of walks and moved up on Blake Ed- wards' ground out to the pitcher. Widdes then cash- ed both runners with a two out base hit. « With two out in the fourth, Gordon received another free pass and scored on Nicholson's dou- ble. Keith Ball plated Nicholson with a single and he scored on Blake Ed- wards' base hit. Rob McLean led off the fifth with a single and scored on back to back two out base hits by Ron Robin- son and Brent Gordon. Port McNicoll finally got to Vasey pitcher Bob Wid- des in the sixth as Thomas reached on an error to the Media slo-pitch Media teams from around the area, will once again be taking the field, for the annual Mixed Media - Slo-Pitch tournament. : The tournament, scheduled August 8, will be taking place at McGuire Park in Penetanguishene, beginning at 9 a.m. This year's event, will have a special feature for hockey fans. Two of the National Hockey League's Toronto Maple Leafs, will be at the park, courtesy of leaf owner Mr. Harold Ballard. The players will be available for autographs, beginning at noon. There will be food and drinks available at the park. Admission for the day long event is $1.50 for adults and 50 cents for children under 13. All proceeds will be go- ing to the St. Margaret's Restoration Fund.
