er cto pce Hil I'm George Beatty Conservative candidate George Beatty discovered he had something in common with one of the people he met in front of the Monitor wants Pauze site kept open The idea of holding open the currently-used Pauze garbage dump until a new north Simcoe dumpsite opens was raised again last Tuesday. At the monthly North Simcoe Waste Manage- ment Association meeting last Tuesday, the idea of extending the life of the polluted dumpsite was raised by the chairman of the Pauze dumpsite monitoring committee, Brent Madill. But most NSWMA members were pessimistic about that possibility. Madill said "'it seems a shame" to close the Pauze site when it will cost the association at least $1 million a yearto truck the garbage outside the area. The NSWMA has been told it must close the Pauze site Oct. 31. And until it secures a new dump (which might not be for another two years) it will have to export its garbage to an as-yet undetermined location. An attempt to extend the life of the Pauze site, which has been proven to be leak- ing pollutants, was made earlier this year. It was scuttled, however, when all parties involved in media- tion could not agree. "For another two years we could be using that dumpsite,"' Madill said at the NSW,MA meeting. "And wetre just walking away from it." But the NSWMA chair- man, Lionel Dion, said it did not look like there was any hope of holding Pauze open. "It's not for lack of trying, though," he said. Madill suggested another try might work, since many cottagers would rally behind the cause and force Tiny Township into agree- ing to an extension of the site. "T don't want to beat a dead horse,"' Madill said, "but if there's hope, why walk away?" At the end of the discus- sion, Chairman Dion told Madill, 'If you've got a ray of hope, pursue it."' "Yes, I will," said Madill. The organizers plan to hold square dances to make enough money to || erase the debt, and enough | money to bankroll the se- cond annual competition. Next year the fiddle and step-dance competition will be held again in Midland, but on Aug. 19 and 20. The Huronia Open organizers unknowingly scheduled their event last month on the same weekend as an established competition in Sundridge. Midland council gave 51,000 to help the event get started. Huronia Open organizer Carolyn White said that the $1,000 will be repaid. The priority is mak- ing $750 "and putting a few dollars away for next year."
