Autumn Where did summer go? by David Gravelle I can't believe summer's over. Where did it all go? It has been a fantastic summer from any way you look at it. If you're a boater, the winds were favorable. Warriors by Vasey Vasey Seniors ended their best of five quarter final Simcoe Rural Fastball series Wednesday night as they nipped Wyebridge Murray Fagan Roofing Warriors 1-0. Both pitchers, Paul Rowe for Wyebridge and Rob McLean for Vasey were outstanding. Although McLean earned the win, the pitching performance of lefty Rowe is one to remember. Rowe allowed three base hits, one in the second, one in the third and one in the fifth. The damaging blow came in the third when right fielder Wayne King stroked a double leading off the frame. Brent Gor- don laid down a bunt to move King to third and Ken Edgar's ground out to third was enough to plate Fox Run If you're a swimmer, the lakes and bays were warm enough to attract those who fear that cool, refreshing feeling. If you're a baseball player, you didn't suffer nipped 1-0 King for the game's only tally. Rowe didn't' walk anyone and recorded nine strikeouts. He deserved a better fate. McLean struck out 10 batters and allowed three base hits, all of which came with two out. Kent Goldsmith and Bob Dutton slapped back to back singles in the fourth, but McLean settled down to whiff Dave Schandlen en- ding the inning. Mike Gadsby, the hero of game three, recorded the other base hit in the sixth. Vasey's next series began last night at home against Hillsdale Barrie Auto Glass in a best of five semi final. This year organizers are hoping for proceeds in excess of four million dollars. many rainouts. If you're a golfer, you got out early in the morning then beat the heat at the beach after lunch. All in all this summer was just a blast. I'm a guy who likes just two seasons: summer and winter. That in between stuff I don't relish because Mother Nature can't seem to make up her mind what she wants. One day it's grey and drizzly, the next it's cool and windy. Therefore, I suggest we organize a petition ad- dressed to Mother Nature, clo The National Weather Centre, Ottawa, Canada. The message, keep the mercury at 26 degrees celcius until November 1st, then give us snow right through until March 31st. Then, overnight go back to those hot humid days of summer we've just experienced. I figure Big mama nature is a businesswomen. She can be bought. If all those who make money because of the weather share the pot (say 3 per cent) with the big lady, she'll give us what we want. Just think of the possibilities. Horseshoe Valley and Blue Mountain would just rake in the bucks if they were guaranteed five full months of snow. Although, they didn't do all that bad last winter in the ski trade. Snowmobilers and boaters would appreciate their crafts a lot more knowing they would be getting their money's worth with a more definite season in place. For me, I'm a beach bum in the summer, and in the winter I'm a curler and throw on the skates once and a while for some hockey. My skiing is im- proving too. Maybe I'm a little wishy washy thinking Mother Nature will really listen to my needs and to the needs of countless others. But, I really wouldn't mind some snow, in say 7 weeks. By that time I'll have a few curling games under my belt, have my skis waxed, and my skates sharpened. I'll have my snowtires purchased and my de-icer for the windshield. Come to think of it, I had better buy a couple of sweaters and a new pair of galoshes. Boy, just thinking of winter is getting me all ex- cited. Excited enough, I'm going to try on my ski boots right now... I'm back. Guess what they still fit. But, I'm going to buy a new pair of skis anyway. On the hill, you have to look good. When you're on the lift and somebody asks what you like about your "'boards"' and all you have on are rentals you want to jump off. Hey! it's only 60 feet to the ground. I apologize to all you sane people out there who are reading this and are wondering what I'm all about. Sometimes, when I day dream I head off in a weird direction. But, wouldn't you really appreciate a snowstorm right now just to get the season off on the right foot.
