No parties, No cake. Just a messy break-up. The Township of Tiny spent its 20th anniversary Oct. 7 in the North Simcoe Waste Management Association by letting its membership lapse and planning how to get along by itself. The township council locked itself behind closed doors last Wednesday talk- ing about what to do in the next few weeks when the Pauze Landfill Site closes. Both Tiny and the NSWMA will have to take drastic measures to ship their waste out of the area after Oct. 31 when Pauze shuts under government order. The landfill site is built on sandy soil and is leaking contaminants into the ground. Both sides will need to take expensive measures after then, as the waste may be shipped all the way to a dump in Toronto. At this point no one except top officials in Environ- ment Minister Jim Bradley's office is quite sure where the waste will have to be taken. At last Tuesday's NSWMA meeting Anthony Lancia, president of the Tiny Township Ratepayers Association and publisher of the bi-monthly newspaper, The Quill, ask- ed the association if it would be willing to co- Operate with Tiny in building a transfer station to hold the garbage tem- porarily before it gets trucked out. "We'll probably build our own," said NSWMA chair- man Lionel Dion to Lancia. "I'm sure our association would be willing to let them use it, but they'll have to pay their share." The next day, NSWMA clerk Yvon Gagne spoke over the telephone to Tiny council as they held their closed-door meeting. But no arrangements were made for future co- operation. "I just informed them what was going on," said Gagne. The provincial govern- ment is expected to direct both the NSWMA and Tiny to an emergency land- fill site this week. Meanwhile, the NSWMA has officially ap- plied to the township for permission to go ahead with a landfill site in the south end of Tiny. That site has been the focus of all the fighting between the two parties, and Tiny is not ex- pected to approve the NSWMaA's application. "Obviously Tiny Township will refuse," said Gagne. "But we can't go to the board directly, we have to go through this pro- cess." The association applied to the township for a change to one of its zoning bylaws. However, this was merely a formality. After 30 days, if Tiny councillors refuse to make the change, the NSWMA can go over their heads to the ministry of the environment for approval. Tiny attempted to sue the NSWMA out of existence earlier this year and avoid paying its membership dues, It lost the case but is appealing. The NSWMA has spent approximately $27,000 in lawyer's fees for the case so far. Recycling is too popular So many people are now recycling their garbage in North Simcoe that the waste management association is running out of blue bins. Every week another 60 households in Penetang decide to join in the area's recycling program. That's according to recycling "manager Liz Downer, who gave a report to the North Simcoe Waste Management Association last week. Increasing the pick-ups from monthly to weekly was "definitely worthwhile doing,"' she said. Also, Port McNicoll has seen an increase of 20 households every week Meanwhile, the associa- tion is starting to run low on its supply of blue recycl- ing bins. Almost 7,000 have been. given away so far, and it is expected there will be "not too many left by the end of this month," ac- cording to Downer.
