| You're on the air Members of the First Penetanguishene Boy Scouts talked to a Texas shortwave radio operator last Saturday during the annual Scout Jamboree on the Air. The Texan said he was sorry the Blue Jays didn't make the World Series. Standing from left behind Jeff Quesnelle are Greg Sheridan, Ladouceur, and Craig Desjardins. Steven Sportsman Inn has new owner There's no room at the Inn in Victoria Harbour. The new owners of the Sportsman Motor Inn don't plan to _ be innkeepers. Bob Monteith and two Toronto men bought the closed Inn last May. Last Friday Monteith said he and his partners aren't sure what they will do with the Inn. He is sure of one thing: it will not reopen as a hotel. Bike and radio are prizes in diabetes draw Bayview School and Port MeNicoll Public School students were the prize winners in the recent diabetes awareness cam- paign draw. A project involving elementary schools in Midland, Penetanguishene, and area, concluded with a draw held at Mountain- view Mall. Peter Khoury, Bayview School, won a bicycle. Dar- ryl Puddicombe, Port McNicoll Public School, won a ghetto blaster radio. The school students who entered the _ contest answered a questionnaire about diabetes, took an in- formation sheet home for signing, and returned the slip for entering in the draw. "It was felt that in this way the message of diabetes awareness would reach teachers, parents and children," Alleyne Att- wood said. The co- operation of the principals and the teachers of the schools was_ greatly appreciated. A demonstration by members of the Hurons Gymnastic Club preceded the draw held in the mall. In September one proposal was outlined. Fifteen million dollars could be spent on developing the property, Monteith said. The Sportsman Inn has been closed since March 22, 1984. The 30 employees were laid off. Although the new owners' plans are not decided, few fulltime jobs would be created. Whatever development comes about will not be commercial. Two hundred to 300 jobs could result during the development of the property, Monteith said. The Victoria Harbour property is a prime spot for development, Monteith said. The Harbour is close to a four lane highway; the Inn land is fully serviced; nearby are such amenities as a liquor store, and.a bank. The village council is go- ing to be given several pro- posals and will be asked to pick one. "We want to put a project in there that everyone will be proud of." The Inn has been "'a white elephant for a few years," Monteith said. After the Inn closed in the spring of 1984, the village council was asked to lease nearby municipal land to the Inn's owners for use as a marina. Negotiation did not go well. The reeve of the day, Doug Jackson, and the village were served with notice of a multi-million dollar suit. The village eventually won. When the property came close to be- ing forfeited to the village, because of non-payment of tax, the owed back tax was paid by a bank. The new owners bought the proper- ty after it was placed in receivership. Monteith preferred not to state the purchase price. . Harbour pays waste share Victoria Harbour's share of the North Simcoe Waste Management Association's 1987 budget is $30,637. Victoria Harbour has a new policy on connection to the village sewage system. The cost of con- nection is $1,600 for a five inch connection at the ap- plicant's property line. The cost to an applicant in the past was $400. because the Ministry of the Environ- ment paid a $1,200 sub- sidy. The subsidy has been dropped. The Ministry has turned over the sewer to the village. The village is now responsible for the sewer. Victoria Harbour council has filled a vacancy on the village's committee of ad- justment. Bryan Larmand will join the committee for the remainder of the pre- sent term. He has been a member of the committee in the past, for two years, and a building inspector. He was the only applicant. Driver hurt in accident as vehicle - strikes tree A Victoria Harbour man was taken to hospital on the weekend with major in- juries after his vehicle struck a tree beside Highway 12 at the Port McNicoll exit.
