All for one Grade 7 students at Victoria Harbour Public School are wondering how debates will now function in New Brunswick where everyone is on the same side. Speaker Jeremy Bumstead is in charge of these grade seven Wet ride This cadet was one of 30 who travelled to Base Borden last weekend. They were treated to a glider ride. Cadets glide at Borden on weekend Wet weather did little to dampen the spirits of 30 recruits from 724 Midland Lions Air Cadets as they travelled to CFB Borden for their first taste of gliding. The new cadets, accompanied by a dozen parents and officers, spent Oct. 10 touring the base visiting training facilities, and gliding. It looked as if the weather would ground all aircraft in the morning. However, by 10 a.m., the ceiling had lifted enough that Captain Steve Skerl- ing, flight commander of the gliding centre, decided to take the tow plane aloft. Each cadet had the oppor- tunity to fly in the tow plane and complete a touch and go circuit of the airfield. For many cadets, it was their first opportuni- ty to fly. By early afternoon, a break in the clouds allow- ed the gliders to be rolled onto the field. All of the cadets and their parents were then able to ex- perience the unique sensa- tions of gliding. The gliders were towed aloft to 1500 feet by the tow plane and released. The complete trip, from take-off to lan- ding, lasts almost 15 minutes. The cadets also spent the day touring CFB Borden. They visited the Canadian Forces fire-fighting train- ing area, viewed static air- craft, visited Worthington Park and spent some time, and money at the Canex. Captain Dave Elwell, commanding officer of 724 Squadron, paid thanks to the parents who par- ticipated in the weekend training. 'Without the help of parents such as yourself, it would be impossible for us to run weekend training such as this."' Wednesday evening, the cadets' introduction to fly- ing continues. Junior and intermediate cadets, under the supervision of Air Studies instructors Robert Mc-Tavish and Officer Cadet Kurt Mann, will be nightflying at the Huronia Airport. Cadets meet at the Midland Civic Centre every Wednesday from 6:45 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. New members welcome. The mayor and some members of the council op- pose buying a new $18,000 leaf plucker. They say the sewer cleaner can do the job. Other council members say the sewer cleaner is too expensive to use as a leaf plucker. The sewer cleaner has to be driven to where the leaves are dumped, in Tiny .Township, to be unloaded. A leaf plucker deposits leaves into a waiting truck. Today and tomorrow's picking up of leaves using the sewer cleaner is a demonstration, Fred Pilon, chairman of public works, said.
