Off to Africa! A Midland man and his giving up their jobs, their home, their cars and almost everything they own to teach in one of the poorest countries in Africa. Citing a love of travel, John Lister says this is just wife are another in a series of world-wide adventures he and his wife have embark- ed upon, "It's rewarding," Lister said in an interview last week at the Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre, where he is the chief fundraiser. "We have a love of ex- panding our horizons,.' he said. His wife Donna is a computer programmer at TRW. When they leave Canada behind in January, they'll leave behind successful careers and comfortable living for life in the im- poverished nation of Lesotho, a life full of unknown quantitites. "We may be living in a house without water, heat or electricity," said Lister. He said he wasn't sure ex- actly what things will be like in the tiny country. "We're trying to go with not many preconceived ideas, so we don't get disappointed." But he added "we have reasonable expectations. We realize it will not be a picnic." Lesotho is a moun- tainous area, a mile above sea limit with a population of about 1.5 million. It has a moderate climate, much like Canada's. "It even snows in the winter,"' says Lister. "It's not the Africa you think of, with safaris and that sort of thing." It is also totally sur- rounded by South Africa, a What am 1 bid? But Lister says he's talk- ed to people from South Africa and does not fear the violence. '"'The press does a great job of blowing Critic's corner by jonr Stoddart Whoopi Goldberg returns to the big screen as L.A. narcotics detective Rita Rizzoli. Her job is to rid the streets of a deadly concoction of cocaine call- ed Fatal Beauty and all those responsible for traf- ficking it. During the course of her attempts we are treated to a travelogue of the seediest parts of Los Angeles and more killings than a small Central American war. Sam Elliott who makes Whoopi one of his rare movie ap- pearances (one every two years) plays a bad guy, turned good guy. Brad Dourff is excellent as the creepiest of all the creeps who pushes the stuff. In Goldberg's other roles, she showed her abbundant acting abilities. Here ex- cept for fleeting moments, that ability is obviously missing. She plays it as sort of an adult Beverly Hills Cop. They will be volunteers with World University Ser- vices Canada, a group funded by the Canadian In- ternational Development Association. Although Lesotho is a poor nation, Lister says the children he and Donna will teach will be among the more well-off. Lister says*he and his wife had to undergo strict testing before being selected by WUSC. "It's difficult to get in," he said. But traveling is nothing new to this couple. After working several years at IBM in Toronto, they gave up that lifestyle and lived as vagabonds for two years. "'We spent four months hitch-hiking across Canada, two months in the South Pacific, three months in New Zealand and five months in Australia." : "We were just traveling along, meeting people," Lister said. "It's an ex- tremely interesting pro- cess." They will miss Midland and all that goes with it, he said. 'I'm disappointed in leaving the Wye Marsh. It's been very rewarding." Some day, after their two- year stay in Africa, they may come back here, he says. Then again, maybe they'll just keep moving along. ae Store Hours: 9:30 - 5:30 Monday to Saturday Friday 9:30 - 9:00 creative play VIHE STORE* "THE CREATIVE PLAY EASEL" "EDUCATIONAL TOYS AND SUPPLIES" 64 Dunlop Street W., Barrie, Ontario, L4N 1A4 Patricia McKay, Sue Keller (705) 722-6886 Christmas Hours: 9:30 - 9:00 Monday to Friday Saturday 9:30 - 5:30 Page 16, Wednesday, December 2, 1987 60 YEARS OR SERVICE TO CANADIANS IN THIS AD CURRENT METRO TORONTO A&P 1987 REGULAR RETAILS SAVINGS SHOWN BASED ON Pre Holi Sale We redeem all food store coupons 7 --_ oT eethes COLEy ¢9) & aon HF ae acs 0 COLA PRICES EFFECTIVE NOVEMBER 30th THRU SATURDAY DECEMBER 5th. day MOUNTAINVIEW MALL & HURONIA MALL Mon. - Wed. 8-9 Thurs. - Fri. 8 - 9:30 Sat. 8-9 ood Pepsi-Cola or 7UP ea ea VARIETIES DUNCAN HINE LAYER ASSORTED Cake Mixes Pure Apple Juice [Umit 4 TINS PER FAMILY PURCHASE | FRESE ©ROM ~ White Grapefruit ASSORTED VARIETIES FANCY iKERNE 2 Del Monte Vegetables 4 FL OZ TIN WITH THIS COUPON SAVE .50 ORANGE PEKOE a i Tea Bags 79 | LIMIT 1 pkg per coupon Offer valid thru December Sth 1987 (Feature price 229 without Coupon) VC #0027056H COUPON case of 24 280 mL tins | WITH THIS NCENTRATED REGULAR MORE P Minute Maid Orange Juice W7+ PORK 4 MOLA 'Heinz Beans -- REGULAR OR DIET | Pepsi-Cola or 7UP | 0.99 | UMIT 1 per coupon Offer valid thru Deer Lifeature pnce 699 without coupon SAVE 100 | Sa PGT REE
