After Wednesday's game was postponed by weather, the charged Lady Marauders travelled to Stayner in a sudden-death play off match. Led by Shari Jef- fery's 19 points, MSS defeated Stayner 43-21. On to Barrie pitted against two undefeated teams, Barrie Eastview and Park Street Orillia. The semi-final with Eastview (12-0) started slowly dominated by the ball- control of Sue Bolton of Eastview and the inside work of Jennifer Balabuk of MSS with six points and key rebo unds. The driving offence of the Lady Marauders created foul trouble for Eastview as they were a step slower for a Midland 24-20 halftime lead. A switch in defensive alignment for MSS with Tami Macfarlane pressur- ing Bolton constantly created many turnovers and poor quality shots by the Eastview girls. With only a few seconds remain- ing in the third quater, Eastview still had not scored a point due to the outst anding defence of the Lady Marauders. Denise Greenwood with 14 and Janet Lewis with 10 led MSS scorers in this 55-30 victory. In the final, Park Street who had defeated MSS twice before started with a double-team trap defence allowing Veronica @Brien to chalk up 10 first quarter points and a 16-10 lead. Then the ball-handling of Brenda Kennedy and Aya Utahara overcame this press with outstanding passing and scoring oppor- tunities on the way to a 25-24 lead at half. Strong help defence by Shari Jef- fery and Julie Richardson created turn overs and con- stantly frustrated the Tro- jans from Park Street. With a 7 -point lead going into the final few minutes, the support squad of Nic ole, Kerry, Lori and Nat went crazy at every turn as they could smell victory. The defence held as MSS won 47-41 and their second straight GBSSA title. Midland had taken a 2-0 lead on their first two shots of the game. Penetang fought back in the second frame to tie the game on goals by Brian Robillard assisted by Glenn Robillard and Shawn Des- jardin from Keith Rankin. In the final frame, Rankin gave Little Lake a 3-2 lead with help from Brian Robillard. Midland knotted the score a minute later when Brad Wadge was left alone in front of Seniors Last Thursday the Coll- ingwood Owls Senior Girls basketball team defeated the MSS Lady Marauders 68-58 in Georgian Bay Playoffs held at MSS. A superb defensive effort by the Midland girls led by Cathy Lewis in her finest game of the year resulted in a 26-26 tie at half time. Later in the game, the Lady Marauders tired causing them to foul and miss many scoring oppor- tunities. For Joanne Monsignor champs Saturday, the Monsignor Castex Girls' Volleyball team captured its first ever Simcoe County Volleyball title in Collingwood. For the girls' team it marked the end of a very rewar- ding season Twelve of the best teams from across Simcoe Coun- ty's Public and Separate Elementary Schools com- peted at the champion- ships in Collingwood. Castex started the day by winning their pool, which include Monsignor Lee from Orillia and Hillcrest from Barrie. Castex next met a very strong Admiral Public School from Collingwood in the quarter finals. The match went the full three games and it proved to be the match of the day. Both teams were very evenly matched, but in the end, Castex's/relentless spiking attack and good solid defence defeated the Ad- miral squad 15-6, 11-15, 15-9. In the semi-finals, Castex's next opponent was Cundles Heights from Barrie, a team they defeated in the finals of the Banting Marauder tourna- ment a week before. The attack caught the Cundles squad flat and Castex defeated Cundles 15-6, 15-13, to advance to the finals. The finals pitted Castex against Tottenham Public School. The strong hitting attack of Cindy Quesnelle, Jennifer Wright, Leanne Hrizo and _ Jennifer McGregor along with the fine setting of Sherry Langley and Meredith For- rest and the fine spot play of Christie Corbiere prov- ed too much for the Tot- tenham team as they fell to Castex 15-6, 15-10. Congratulations to the players from the Mon- signor Castex girls volleyball team on a great season. the Penetang goal. With only 13 seconds left on the clock, Midland pressed the 'play in the Penetang end. The Little Lakers kept backing in on their goaltender allowing David Forrest to bang in the winning counter in a goal mouth scramble. Saturday night, Penetang fettered away a 5-1 lead and had to settle for a 6-6 draw with Collingwood. The first period ended 1-1 when Jim Hartman tied the score halfway in the frame. The hometown boys opened their 5-1 lead in the bow to Faragher and Pam Bala buk this was their final ap- pearance on the high school scene. Colling wood a as Rt a ne Bob and Gennie Laurin. Collingwood replied with two late tallies in quick suc- cession to end the period down a pair at 5-3. Keith Rankin doubled the count for Penetang ear- ly in the third before the Penetang boys _ self destructed. Penalties led to the downfall with Coll- ingwood scoring the next two goals on _ the powerplay. With less than a minute left in the game, Collingwood pulled their goaltender and the sixth man skated in unchecked and scoring the game tying marker with 24 seconds showing on the clock. Sunday, the team travell- ed to Bracebridge and lost 6-3. Brian Robillard collected a pair of markers with Keith Rankin scoring once. Some shoddy defensive work and weak back checking by several for- wards continue to plague the team. The Penetanguishene Little Lake Service Center Midgets will be on the road again Wednesday before heading for the Elmvale Tournament on _ the weekend. Collingwood sunk 12 foul shots and capitalized on a depleted MSS squad for the victory. Midland's offence centred around Karen Graham who scored a season high 40 points in the losing cause. it FREE, Rd. 526-0155 Wye Heritage Marina - Midland First left past Martyrs' Shrine Off Hwy 12E on Ogdens Beach WINTER STORAGE AVAILABLE NOW Bring in your Mercury, Johnson and Evinrude Out- board for a tune up and we will store Our factory trained mechanics offer quality service at competitive prices. ee a FA ee el Oe ee Soe = ot os pee. pee eee ee Scie, deh 6 Mae. det de TS ee pena kee Bit cee Kiser Scat ee oe jee an oe ------- Pe Ne es eo ae e249 "page e? 2 ee
