7 4 y 4 / I Ports iPr: White advances to regionals The Cindy White skipped foursome earn- ed the right to advance to the Southern On- tario Ladies Curling Association Regional Playdowns next weekend in Huntsville. Sunday afternoon at the Midland Curling Club, White defeated the Paulette Gauntlett rink of Parry Sound 14-0 after five ends. In Midland's first contest of the double knock-out playdown on Saturdy, Gauntlett handed them a 10-2 loss. In other first round action, Gravenhurst defeated Parry Sound (Marg Miner) 8-2, Parry Sound (Gauntlett) dumped Huntsville 11-3, Ann Ross of Penetang was doubled by Gravenhurst 12-6. The losers of the first round were then relegated to the B side where the eventual winner would advance to the regionals alon with the winner of the A side. Midland got their game under control and sidelined Miner of Parry Sound 9-5. Mean- while, Ann Ross dumped Huntsville 14-2. Saturday evening, Gravenhurst won the right to advance by nipping Parry Sound's Gauntlett by an 8-7 count. Sunday morning, Midland and Penetang met to determine who would meet Gauntlett in the B side final. Midland persevered in this one winning 8-5 in a contest that was ex- ceedingly more exciting than the one that was to follow. Without the hammer in the first end White called for rock after rock counting, the Parry Sound skip released the last rock and agoniz- ing as it hit off a yellow stone in front and list out of the houe allowing White to steal five. White again put the rocks in the house in the second end and counted four when Gauntlett failed on a draw shot with the hammer. When things go wrong, they really go wrong. By the time Gauntlett positioned herself in the hack to deliver her final rock of the end, she was facing five Midland stones. The attempted draw shot went wide and was too heavy, but it grabbed a straw at the last minute and drew in near the button. As luck would have it, the ensuing measure- ment gave a single point to White. Three more Midland counters in the fifth spelled the end of a nightmare for the Parry Sound foursome.
