The Barrie League had folded, they had lost their sponsor and last years coach found himself too busy to guide them through the coming season. Although the team had kept in shape by playing in- door soccer through the winter they suffered fur- ther setbacks when some key players went looking for greener pastures. Pro- bably the greatest loss was Shane Spurr, the leagues top scorer last season, he opted to play for Orillia United this year. Donny Foster, who is the teams general factotum, went looking for a league for the team to play in and some players to replace the defectors. He did very well in both departments. The team will be playing in the Muskoka League and he managed to recruit some very useful players. The home field will be Penetang Secondary School and the games will be played every other Sun- day, kick off one p.m. The well kown local referee, Mr. Erich Deininger, has agreed to officiate. In order to better reflect the true composition of the team, it will be known as Mid-Pen United. A good sponsor could possibly effect a change of name. Mid-Pen United 6 Gravenhurst 1 The game _ played Wednesday at Penetang was a good runout for the new players. Two of them proved to be valuable ac- quisitions. Alex Emberley, a newcomer, to the area, he played for Holy Cross in Newfoundland, scored a good headed goal on a cross from oldtimer Dave Campbell. Emberley, when he is matchfit, will be a double threat alongside Campbell who seems to have shaken his knee miseries from last year. Campbell notched his usual routine goal. Another new player, right winger Dave Laverdiere scored in his first game. Regular players Ted Chisholm, ex- ploded for three goals in the second half to over- whelm the opposition. The occasion was a first for me too, these tired old eyes did a double take, there was a young woman playing for Gravenhurst. I was even more surprised to note that she was playing at the right back position. The full backs are the last line of defence, usually played by grissled old warhorses. She had chosen to play in the trenches. I didn't see her deliver any bone-jarring tackles but she read the game well and played the attackers out to the wing well. The lady's name is Sue Redpath, welcome to mixed soccer Sue. Mid-Pen United 3 Orillia Internationals 2 On paper the United stood no chance in this en- counter. Orillia, formely stand-outs in the Newmarket League, have won the first three games this season. They started as though they were going to make this one their fourth victory. After about twen- ty minutes they were up two goals by Art Bialas and Robbie Wilkshire. Slowly the game turned around. Nick Bourdeuris took his place between the sticks after an absence of 25 years for the game. After the first and the turning point came when Dave Laverdiere threw himself in front of a shop that was destined for the top of the net. He had to be helped from the field. The United picked up their game and while it two goals he settled down Muskoka Soccer The Midland soccer club playing under their new name Mid-Pen United, stole a game away from league Leaders Orillia Internationals on Sunday Afternoon in Penetang. Well known local referee Mr Erich Dein- inger, is keeping a watchful eye on his charges. The VAP os must be admitted the: Orillia was the more skill- ed side, it is more to the credit of Mid-Pen that they outhustled the opposition. Another new player, Bernt Helmich, scored the goal for the game on a centre form Dave Campbell. Helmich repaid the com- pliment when he sent a through ball down the cen- tre for Campbell to run on to and score. The winning goal was scored by Camp- bell from the penalty spot.
