SS Orillia downs Midland again by Bryan Peter Wednesday, May 25, 1988 marked the 2nd An- nual Crownlife Participac- tion Challenge. Midland residents donn- ed their sweats and sneakers to participate in at least 15 continuous minutes of physical ac- tivities. This ranged from an individual walk to mass aerobics classes. Regardless of the activity you chose, your involve- ment was much appreciated. With the combined effort of everyone in our com- munity, the Challenge was taken with great anticipa-' tion. Special thanks to the following community groups, agencies, schools, businesses and industries, who took an active part in this year's Challenge and contributed largely to our grand total: Bayview Public School (357), CKMP (15), Huronia Optical (2), 750 King Street Retirement Lodge (16), Midland Town Office (3), Therrien's Furniture (4), Huronia Historical Parks (43), Midland Tennis Club (24), Sunnyside Golf Club (10), Midland Lawnbowl- ing (41), Minor Baseball (123), Leitz Girls Baseball (12), The Y.M.C.A. After the teams traded runs in the first inning, Penetang struck for three in the third to take a 4-1 lead. Penetang blew the cover off the ball in the late innings with four in the fifth, five in the sixth and closing out with six. Cathy Cadieux, Marg Dorion, Deanne King, Mitch Lacroix and Linda Ferraro all collected three hits in the win. Ferraro pounded put a round tripper and added a pair of doubles. Lacroix, King and Cadieux each stroked a two bagger. Donna Asselin pitched five innings for the win allowing five base hits. Cin- dy King finished up per- mitting a pair of base hits in as many innings. Carol Barr allowed all 20 base hits on the mound for Coldwater Environment Week "We can save this planet" is the message of hope celebrated during En- vironment Week at the Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre. The government of Canada has set aside May 30th June 5 as a time to prove that we care about the environment. "Our Common Future" is this year's Environment Week theme. Wye Marsh itself is living proof of hope and love for our environment. This community fought to keep the wildlife centre alive through the crisis three years age, when govern- ment cutbacks threatened its survival. On June 5 come and see for yourself what we have saved for "Our Common Future."' You'll be proud. From 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. a guided walk on the board- walk called Marshes Alive will take you into nature's nursery. Countless birds, mammals, fish, reptiles and invertebrates make their homes there -- an un- told wealth of life and beauty, saved from destruction by determined conservationists. From 2 to 4 p.m. in the centre, a discussion on the Trumpeter Swan rein- troduction project will lift your spirits even further. A pair of swans will be brought to Wye Marsh later this summer. The hope is that these majestic birds will breeed and that one day the Wye Valley will ring again with their calls, as it did in the time of the Hurons, before hun- ting and habitat change wiped them out. Wye Marsh's swan project pro- ves that the damage we do to our environment can be undone, if we care enough. Page 14, Wednesday, June 1, 1988 ~ « Z.
