ee A_7-0 decision for Vasey : McLean turns back Port McNicoll Vasey Seniors won their third game in a row Thurs- day night with a 7-0 deci- sion over Port McNicoll Del Brooco Homes. The "win in Port MeNicoll brought their record to four wins, four loses and a tie in the Sim- coe Rural Fastball League. Vasey scored four times in the first inning and add- ed three more in the fourth while pitcher Rob McLean was mowing down the op- Rugby team splits For the second time in two weeks, Midland Secondary School rugby team hosted a touring Scot- tish squad, Berwickshire of Duns, Scotland. In the games played Wednesday, Berwickshire Midget team defeated MSS 15-14 in a very close match. Midland's tries were scored by Joe King, Bryan Craig and Kelly Wilson. Bennett had one conversion. The Berwickshire side never gave up and came back late in the game to score the winning try. Stuart Carss and Steve Campbell damage for the touring Scots with three tries and a penalty kick. In the junior contest, MSS came out on top 16-4 in a well played contest. Mike Lafreniere, Tom Lediard with two and Chuck Baker scored tries for Midland. Ber- wickshire's John Cryer responded with an early try. Midland played a strong defensive match not allow- ing the tourists to gain much ground. This has been a banner year for MSS rugby with a Scottiah tour in March, an excellent season at home and the hosting of two touring Scottish clubs. Midland women play golf On June 14 the Brooklea Golf Club Ladies' Section joined the Midland Ladies' Section for a fun day of golf and friendship. On June 21 the first round of the Jean Waliace Eclectic competition was held. Ald2zne Maclnnis of MG and CC was low net for the day and the follow- ing were winners in their flights: 1st flight Mae seldon; 2nd flight Kay Lapere; 3rd flight Betty Moss; 4th flight Shirley Stokes. Thursday, June 23 was the final day of the Finlayson Trophy held at the Midland Club. Once again Midland was vic- torious in keeping the Cup in Midland. This is the 66th year that the Finlayson trophy has been played for between Barrie, Collingwood, Orillia and Midland. Jason did--aH--the----- position. McLean allowed only two singles in the con- test while striking out 10 and issuing no walks. Ken Edgar and Brent Gordon opened the game with back to back base hits. After McLean fanned for the first out, Keith Ball walked to load the bases. With two out, Port second baseman, Gary Watson, had difficulty getting the ball out of his glove allow- ing a run to score. Butch Smitten followed with a bases emptying triple before Jeff Bumstead grounded out to first en- ding the inning. Bumstead got the wheels in motion again in the fourth with a one out base hit followed by Wayne King's single. Ken Edgar reached on a fielder's choice, but all hands were safe. Brent Gordon ripped a double to clear the bases but was thrown out trying to stretch it to three. McLean grouded to second ending the inning. Kevin Thomas went the route for the loss serving up nine hits.
